Advantages: Unlike uni accommodation you can use the house during the holidays

Disadvantages: Contracts, bills, not on campus

Accommodation for students in Aber is OK. The accommodation office at the university give out a list of properties and landlords have to make sure the property is up to their standards eg gas safety etc. The acc. office will also help out with contract advice and any other problems.

You do have to be quite organised as most houses are snapped up by Christmas although there are plenty about afetr that you just have to look a bit harder. Also if you're really stuck the university won't let you have nowhere to live and will help you out or provide a place in halls.

Houses in town are quite expensive, about £50 per week with bills etc on top. If you have a car and can live out of town (2-5 miles) you can almost half the rent. You do really need a car though if you're going to do this as the bus services etc aren't very frequent!

There are a number of estate agents in town that act as agents for landlords but they can be more trouble than they are worth, charging for credit checks which they know students won't pass then charging again to get your parents to be guarentor. They also like to have 6 month contracts which means paying full rent over the summer which is pointless if you're not going to be there. Most houses on the uni list don't do this. Unfortunatly if you're after a really nice house, I live in a 4 bedroon converted farmhouse 5 miles from town and pay £27/week, then you'll probably have to tackle the estate agents.
