Advantages: Cheap, Reasonable Quality, Good uni accomodation

Disadvantages: Some problem areas

Firstly the uni accomodation, then private accomodation options.

Castle Leazes

Modeled on Dartmoor prison, these 1969 built blocks are typical student accomodation. They aren't as bad as the above makes it sound, the rooms are ok and it is a big community of 1150 students and quite easy to make friends. There is a washbasin in every room and they are well situated very near to campus. The food is not good, but this is the best catered option. Go for Freeman or Eustace Percy if you don't need to stay in over the summer and save £200!

Henderson Hall

Nicer than Castle Leazes, but comes with one significent problem. It is way out and so far out that it is annoying to get in and back. A shame really, as nice rooms (some en-suite) and good grounds. But I would avoid this

Richardson Road

Basic but fine, better placed than the main alternative (St Mary's College). Big community, easy to make friends and you have more freedom. Overall gets the thumbs up

St Mary's College

Better furnishings, car parking space, nicer rooms, washbasins, same price as Richardson Road. You may be asking `what's the catch`. The catch is that it's a distance (1 and a half miles) out. It's up to you as a person whether you can handle this

Leazes Terrace

Good, more independent feel, well suited if you are from boarding school. More like a house than the others, which have definite communal atmospheres. From the above, you should be able to tell whether you will like it here.

Very few to avoid. Perhaps Henderson Hall if anything

Private accomodation

Fenham

Can be great, I know people who have lived here no problems, on rents of £25-30 a week no less!. Near uni as well. The minus is the high (supposed) crime rate. What I would say is near the uni is fine, but the part near Benwell is to be avoided.

Heaton

A big student haunt, rents a
bout £40 a week. Like Fenham but safer and a bit further away. It's up to you whether the extra rent is worth a bit more safety but in my view you shouldn't have any problems in Fenham

Jesmond

Very nice, rents £50 per week, much safer as well as being better quality of houses. But much more expensive. This is the area if money is no object.

Gosforth

Avoid. Like Heaton or Jesmond, with rents in the same region but much further out.

Other areas (Benwell, Scotswood, Byker) are best avoided, the locals aren't too fond of students!

But this is a safe city with few actual problems, although you should really keep out of the areas mentioned above. The uni accomodation is good. Overall a thumbs up!
