I stay in a self-catering flat managed by the accomodation office of University of Newcastle. In my opinion, there are both strengths and weaknesses in the service and facility provided by the university accomodation office. I would certainly think that the allocation team of the office does a marvellous job. When allocating accomodation to students, they take very much consideration into the needs and cultural background of each individual student. Also, much flexibility is allowed for students to choose the type of accomodation they want and to choose their own flatmates. Besides, there is a wide variety of accomodation types to cater for students with different preferences and financial ability. Maintenance and repair are also extremely efficient, any needs for repair is usually dealt with within the same day.
As for weaknesses, as far as I know, two accomodation sites have poor facility, being described as "unbearable" by many students. One of these is also found to be located too far from the campus. Another weakness is that invoices for rent are often sent to students very near the due dates. Also, for cleaners who are on leave, no one takes over their jobs.
However, I would still think that University accomodation is worth considering.
