Advantages: Glenamara, Stevenson, Garth Heads
Disadvantages: Claude Gibb and Lovaine Flat & Halls
Im a first year at the University of Northumbria at Newcastle and I live in one of the Universities best halls of residence, Glenamara House (named after Lord Glenamara I think). There are 5 halls within the Unis city campus- Claude Gibb, Lovaine Flats, Lovaine Halls, Glenamara, Stevenson Building and Garth Heads. The uni has also applied for planning permission for a 350 room h.o.r next door to Glenamara. Claude Gibb Hall This is the only fully catered hall and as a result is the oldest. I have many freinds that live in "the gibb" and have to say it is a pretty awful place although the renovation that is going on at the moment is improving some of the floors. One floor hasn't been renovated since 1966 when the hall was built! "The Gibb" is an 11 storey tower block that dominates the precinct skyline. If you are considering moving here, I wouldn't stop you but be warned, the food is absoloute slop. Garth Heads A self catered h.o.r about 10 mins walk from the uni, this is a pretty good place to be. Being a listed building, I find it strange that of all the people to live in it, they decided to put students in! It really is an old building and it suffers from being a bit far from the uni although it does seem to develop its own micro community. The shop on the corner is run by two gay blokes so if ur a bloke, watch out when you bend down to get that last 'pasta n sauce' from the conviniently positioned box on the floor! Overall a good laugh. Lovaine Flats and Halls Roughly the same format. If you suffer from cabin fever, it is NOT advisable to live here! The words "prison" and "cell" come to mind when ne1 talks about the old lovaine. I have quite a few mates in here, including one called Willy Woo, but thats another story entirely! The rooms are tiny, the kitchens are minature and the "living room" constitutes a table and some plastic chairs. The main adv
antage of this place is its locality to the union, however, the noise on a night is pretty and the fire alarm seems to go off every 5 minutes. Stevenson Building Id love to write a lovely long reveiw about these halls, but I havent been there so I cant. I have been told its nice though. Bit like a spaceship aparently! Glenamara House Ahhhh the old "glenas" as I affectionatley call it. Or not so old.... Glenamara is the the most recently constructed h.o.r back in 1995/6 and is without doubt the most spacious and modern of the halls. Security is a big factor here as it is situated the other side of the motorway form the uni and sometimes students get mugged outside but not very frequently. The rooms are next biggest to "the gibb" although the kitchens are HUGE and modern. If you are applying to the uni MAKE THIS YOUR FIRST CHOICE!! Okay the halls of UNN arent great but youve got to remember, its better to live in a not so nice place with a top group of people than to live in a nice place with a bunch of tossers..... Good luck if your applying! Tom
