Advantages: Great views and social set up
Disadvantages: All university accomidation world wide is too expensive really
The first year halls are all situated closely together and just on the other side of the loch bridge to all the main facilities and most of the university buildings. They are built from Skye marble, but it looks more like concrete at the minute to tell the truth, as the white marble is now grey with dirt. They are quite cheap, 1,400 a year inclusive of bills, use of games room and computer room and with 24hour porter and warden assistance. The rooms aren't particularly big, but I'm sure for anybody living in a modern house they are just the same size as your bedroom there. You get a sink with light and shaver socket, lamp, a big desk, chair, bed, book shelves, wardrobe, four drawers and above head storage space where you can lock things away while you are on holiday to keep them safe. The rooms all have excellent views due to the universities prime location. In my first year I had a view of Stirling castle, the mountains and the loch from my bedroom window, and a view of the Wallace Monument and the loch from my kitchen window. There is also talk of fitting phones and computers on the internet in every room, but this is still under debate. The layout is generally two kitchens per floor, each shared by about 12 students (each hall containing about 350 students. These are fitted with benches, cupboards, tables, chairs, kettles a sink unit and oven, grill and hobbs, and in some cases a microwave and toaster, but usually people will bring these things anyway. There is also one massive fridge where each student has his or her own locked compartment, so nobody can steak your food. This is a good system as it means that you are sharing a kitchen with a small number of students so you get a chance to make friends quickly. Each hall also has a social area, a games room (with pool tables, table tennis, games machines, table football etc.), a disabled computer room on the internet, a standard computer room, pay phones, vending machine
s, a television room, video room and porters desk for 24 hour assistance and security. Finally, you can also get a meals package with first year accomidation, whereby you can either get one meal or two meals everyweek day at the refectory, this is good for social interaction, but I just stayed self catering. The halls are quite friendly and very safe, and also not particularly inhibiting, and very well designed for social interaction. There is also a hall social comittee which organises parties, coach trips for nights out in Glasgow/Edinburgh, quizes, tournaments, a weekly video night, that sort of thing. Everywhere is very warm as well and each room is individually heated, my final important point.
