Advantages: cheap

Disadvantages: tiny rooms

Many of the new DMU students get put in halls for their first year. If you are really lucky you will get a place in New Wharf, decent accomodation overlooking the canal, or the fairly new William Rowlett halls, which are expensive but very well equipped, 1min away from the union and above a bar and a small supermarket syle store ( what more could a student need) .

I however was put in accomodation 3 miles from uni called Hospital Close, it was pretty crap, overpriced and we had to get a bus in to uni everyday( luckily for new students this is no longer used ). The advantage of this however, was that the 100 or so students there formed a small community, lots of parties, relationships (and fueds) most of my best friends were made at those halls.

The first year in halls is the best time you'll have at uni - it is also the time when you'll meet the people you'll share a house with in the 2nd year. ( 1st years will get to go to a 'find a house' day where they will meet others who haven't got a hall place and find a house!)

The most popular place for students to live in rented houses is Narborough Road - its very close to the uni, and full of cheap shops, ideal for a student budget. There's also a couple of trendy bars - Lunar Blu and Nine Bar for instance.

Houses are often 4 bedrooms ( with 3 large and 1 tiny room) and generally cost between £35-40 per week , exclusive of bills. Deposits are usually £150-200 , and you'll be very lucky to get all of this back. Landlords can claim all sorts of reasons, such as the freezer needed defrosting, to take money from the deposit.

Private landlords often provide a better service than agencies, but it can be a gamble. The best way to find a house is to inherit a good one from some 3rds who are leaving - meeting 3rd years is easy if you're a member of any clubs or societies.

DMU housing association (found in the Fletcher building) can p
rovide you with more housing advice.
