Advantages: cheap

Disadvantages: hard to find a really nice place

Being a past student of the University of Teesside I know a fair bit about the accommodation. It has a variety of student residence. There's King Edwards square which is the cheapest. It's a bunch of houses which are in very bad shape, stay well away. There's Woodlands Halls which are quite nice, the building is sectioned off into little flats with about 6 bedrooms all en suite, kitchen/sitting room and bathroom. Quite nice but tight for space. There's Linthorpe Halls which are just rooms with a shared kitchen on each section. They're quite small and cold looking. The floors are not carpeted and I seem to remember thinking they more resembled concrete. There's Parkside houses which again are nice but small and last but not least there are Parkside Halls of Residence. These are the 2nd cheapest halls and in my opinion are also the nicest. It's a converted hospital so all the hallways and rooms are really spacious, there are shared rooms and single rooms. There are 4 cooking areas on each floor. I think halls are a good idea for first years to get to know people but I wouldn't recommend it for more than that.
The private accommodation in Middlesbrough is varied but it's generally quite cheap. If you're looking for something cheap and cheerful, there are always a few of the not so good houses up for £20 a week. On average the paying rate is £30 a week for a decent house. The extremely nice ones are about £35-40. For private accommodation start looking early for the good ones.

An ex-Teesside myself, I think this is really useful, although some of the prices have gone up for somewhere decent. The housing office stuck me in an awful house in my first year with slugs and holes in the floor, so I wouldn't recommend their accomodation - it's much better private.
