Advantages: It's where the mojority of other students live

Disadvantages: It's just plain nasty!

As a new student at Birmingham university I am disgusted at the housing that they offer students. Not to mention the food! For the first 3 weeks of term our flat in Maple Bank had no heating or hot water. The rooms are infested - we all wake up in the morning with bites all over us. The rooms are damp and so nothing can be left on the floor or the windowsill.
The food served in the halls is literally terrible and unidentifyable. All this for about £3000 a year! Aren't I the lucky one?!
Nobody expects university accomodation to be wonderful but for the money that we pay I think that we should be able to expect places where there is hot water and heating not to mention rooms without god knows what living in them too.
So my advice for anyone going to university and Birmingham in particular is to check out the accomodation before you apply and to make sure that you have a list of numbers that you can complain to!

I was in Manor House, out in the sticks. I thought it was
quite OK, and better than the other halls I saw. The food
wasn't great, but the bar was cheap (back in 91) and the
building and surroundings were very nice. Also had quite
a friendly and close-nit atmosphere, being away from the
rest of the Uni.
A couple of years after I left they built some more rooms
there, which looked very posh, with en-suite bathrooms, etc.
I suspect having a double-barrelled name helped if you wanted
to get one of those rooms ;)
