Mason Hall at The University of Birmingham (Accommodation in general)
Name: goodalljenny
Advantages: Great atmosphere, Close to Campus Disadvantages: Basic but adequate
Reading some of the reviews on here i'm really surprised to hear some of the horror stories about accomodation in the halls of residence at Birmingham. I lived in Mason Hall in 1997 and would definately recommend it to anyone starting at Birmingham. The rooms are basic but always warm and cleaned regularly with bins being emptied daily. I understand that they now also have phones in each room which is an advantage as there used to be quite a que for the two public phones near the entrance hall. The staff were always really friendly and helpfull and the security guard was always willing to help with small emergencies such as having locked yourself out of your room and looking after parcels delivered for you. When i was there lads and lasses were on alternate floors with shared common rooms and kitchens for each floor (every second floor in the tower block). Most of the rooms were single rooms with a single bed, desk with bookshelves above, chair, wardrobe (with lockable section to leave pots and pans etc in during the eholidays when the room is let out to conferences etc), sink and pinboard. Some rooms were twin but don't worry about being put with someone you don't get on with as it's pretty easy to swop. The hall provides clean sheets every week but some people prefer to take there own as the plain white cotton can give the room a hospital look. Entertainment wise mason is pretty active. There's a pool room and bar which is always full and the JCR (Junior Common Room) organise events - we had things ranging from a hypnotist to barn dance. There was also a reasonable size computer room with free printer. Each floor is looked aftere by a member of live in teaching staff who can also being someone to turn to in emergencies or when you just need a shoulder to cry on. Summary: |
