Advantages: Cheap, provided for all 3 years

Disadvantages: Had to empty all our stuff out during the holidays

Cambridge is unique in that most colleges will provide you with accomodation for all 3 years of your course.
The quality of the accommodation varies within college, but mostly it is very high.

I was in King's college, and during my 1st year I had a small room, but with en suite facilities, and a 'gyp' room (small kitchen) nearby. My room also had a fridge - major bonus!

For my 2nd and 3rd years I lived in a hostel - these are building not within the college complex, but owned and managed by college. The hostel was lovely - a row of large victorian terraces, with gardens leading onto the river. In each 'house' in the hostel there was a proper kitchen, with freezers, fridges and so on. There was a laundrette for the whole hostel in the basement of one of the houses.

Other types of accomodation were available. The system for choosing your accomodation was based on a lottery. Everyone had a particular time, choosen at random, when they had to choose their accomodation, and room were chosen on a first come first served basis. This was a pretty fair system, as we did get some choice.
