Advantages: Cheap, Variety of rooms

Disadvantages: All on campus, Dull in the rain

Lancaster Uni is great, so, if you've chosen to come here then you're going to have a fab time!

The uni is split up into 8 colleges (Plus Graduate) for administration and residential purposes. Each college has it's own JCR (Junior Common Room) with executive comittee that organise all the fun aspects of life in the college and lots of people to make sure everything else runs smoothly.

All rooms are heated, have a bed, desk, wardrobe (some lockable), and shelves. Some have a sink and a mirror.Kitchens are equipped with fridges (if you're lucky, a freezer) a microwave, a cooker, a proper sink, table, chairs and enough storage space for all people. You even get a cleaner that sorts out communal areas!!!!

You will have to pay a deposit of £82.80 which includes insurance for belongings up to £3000. You will get it back if you're room is left in a decent condition!

Here's the options...

COUNTY

The architecture of County College was copied from a European Prison, it looks grim apart from the beautiful oak tree in the middle of the college. The rooms are spacious with a sink and window seat. You will share a kitchen with approximately 26 people. Sounds alot, but there is more than one cooker and sink! There is also accommodation in County West, but this is reserved for final year and mature students. The rooms are smaller but it is a quiter block.

Cost (per week in all cases): £45.15

CARTMEL

This is my college. I chose it because it was near to the music rooms. It's pretty and away from the centre of campus. The rooms are either new en-suite rooms sharing a kitchen with 4 or with a sink and approx 11 people per kitchen and 2 bathrooms. The blocks are usually split males ground floor, females top floor and mixed in the middle floor.

Cost: Standard £40.95
En-suite £60.55

LONSDALE

The residence blocks in Lonsdale are above t
he academic departments. Everything else is the same as Cartmel..

BOWLAND

If you have gone past Lancaster Uni on the M6 you will have seen Bowland Tower. Some students live here, although selected very carefully. It is almost common for students to commit suicide from throwing themselves off the tower. If you do want the spectacular views of the Lakes, countryside and coast and you're mentally stable, Bowland Tower is great. Other Bowland accommodation is situated around Alexandra Square and is constantly noisy. My advice is not to live there unless you're the one making the noise!

Cost: Tower £43.75
Standard £40.95
En-Suite £60.55

FURNESS

Very similar to Cartmel except more central. There are new rooms which are not en-suite but share a kitchen with only 4.

Cost: New £46.55
Standard £40.95

FYLDE

The sporting college, situated next to the sports centre has only standard rooms, again sharing with up to 11 per kitchen and 2 bathrooms.

Cost: £42.35

GRIZEDALE

Further from the centre of campus, but seems a bit dingy to me. It only has standard rooms and a few flats.

Cost: £43.75

PENDLE

Pendle is a new college and has new bigger rooms. The kitchen is shared between eight and the toilets and bathrooms are lovely. Also attached to Pendle is the George Fox building, lectures downstairs, accommodation upstairs. These rooms are the same standard as Pendle but possibly bigger. There are both en-suite and standard rooms. En-suite is really not necessary in this college the blocks are nice anyway.

Cost: Standard £46.55
En-Suite £60.55

Apart from the rooms there are a limited amount of flats, ususally avaiable to mature students, staff, families or special cases. They vary in size and amount of rooms, but there is something suitable for everyone! The cost starts at £66.15 per week for a sma
ll flatlet.

So which do you choose???

Common sense will guide you as far as location and cost are concerned. My recommendations are: Pendle for it's views and good rooms, Cartmel or Furness as they're good colleges, adn Fylde if you're sporty. The others are pretty average. I would avoid Bowland...but some people like it!

Additional information can be found on the website (www.lancs.ac.uk) or in the prospectus.

Have a great time wherever you decide to live...but watch out, I'll be living in Cartmel next year!!!!!
