Advantages: Great to make friends, reasonable rent, owned by the art school

Disadvantages: Quite crowded at times and noisy - but it is 1st year!

I lived in the Margaret MacDonald halls of residence in Buccleuch Street for my 1st year at Glasgow School of Art.
It was a brilliant way of making friends quickly - you have no other option with 8 to a flat! I think the flats are now unisex but they weren't in 1995. I shared with 7 other girls (can you imagine the noise?) There were 4 (tiny) bathrooms, so fortunately you never have to queue for a shower in the morning! As the halls were only built in 1995 they are modern and of a moderately good quality. The individual rooms are big enough - although it does get a little cramped when you are trying to put your portfolio together! You can pay a little more for an ensuite bathroom - but I wouldn't bother as it takes up space in your room and it is just big enough - just, as it is!
The communal space is a kitchen/living room with 2 sinks, 2 cookers and 2 fridges - so you shouldn't have too much of a fight for space. It is a good size as well - I stayed in C-block (I know!, but it isnt that much like jail!) and the view was great esp during sunset - when the whole room went red.
They are brilliantly located right next to the art school so you can leave with 5 minutes to spare before class and make it. Although sometimes being this close means you just dont bother going! You are also close to the Vic (student union and 2nd home - serves cheap booze, has a club and serves cheap filling lunches) Excellent to stumble home - you cant get lost! The halls are on the hill with the school and Vic and some shops - so the only reason you have to leave is to go to the bank!
The rules are imposed by the art school (no drugs, no setting off fire alarms, no smoking in your room - only in the kitchen) so if you break them and are caught the art school disciplines you and has the power to throw you out AND expell you if your crimes are serious enough. But I knew people who got busted smoking hash in their room and they were only fined £50 for the 1st offence
.
Very good place to start off if you are new to Glasgow with no friends - but after 1 year sharing a flat with that many people can wear thin! Especially after the 9000th fire alarm going off - but this is part of being a fresher!
