Broadgate Park
by STEFNEEK10 I lived at Broadgate Park for two years and I can honestly say that the only positive which I can find is the fact that it is situated so close to the University. The main problem that you may be interested in if you are considering living at Broadgate Park is that the 24 security and a safe home from home environment which ... they advertise is not at all safe and this has been confirmed to me by the police. At least one of the gates into the complex (which are supposed to be card access only in the night time) were always broken at some point during my two year stay which meant that anyone could just walk in to the complex. This is especially worrying as the complex is located so close to an estate which is known to be unsafe and a crime hotspot. On at least 3 occasions I had to call reception to alert them of the fact that homeless people were sitting inside the complex and drinking because obviously they cannot notice this themselves as their security is so poor. The worst breach of security which occurred during my stay was when the car entrance gates had been broken for several months. A car drove into the complex, smashed their way into the Londis that was directly below my flat and stole high value products. Obviously this is not what you expect from a complex that advertises itself as safe and I certainly did not feel safe after this incident especially as they did not fix the gates until several months after this happened. A further safety problem which was undoubtedly caused by the fact that at one stage neither the gates to the front of the complex or the gates to the bike storage room were working and were left permanently open. I had noticed that cut bike locks began to litter the floor in the bike storage room and then one day my flat mate discovered that the same thing had happened to his bike. A police man visited the scene and said that the site was not in fact secure at all and it was obvious that thieves had been targeting Broadgate Park. Broadgate Park were unwilling to help and refused to let us or the police see the CCTV which leads me to believe that either the CCTV wasn't working or they did not want to be proven as the guilty party. The police man said that their signs stating that they were not liable if bikes were stolen were invalidated by the fact that they had advertised themselves as a secure complex and it was clearly the opposite. A further point not related to security is their terrible organisation. This was first obvious before I even moved there and they only gave me one mandate form for a studio shared by two people. Obviously when you are sharing with a friend you do not share a bank account and as they have many twin studios you would have thought they would realise this. When I asked if we could pay separately they said I should change the mandate form with tip-ex. On several occasions I went to pay my term's rent and they would tell me that I owed them my deposit or the previous term's rent because their computer system wasn't working or the staff were obviously too incompetent to organise this information correctly. This is worrying as they are dealing with very large sums on money and they are obviously incapable. Their incompetence reached it's peak when I finally moved out this summer. They have deducted half of the deposit of me and my room mate (totalling 250 pounds) to replace the carpet in our previous room. I have two problems with this. Firstly, the carpet is terrible, cheap and like sandpaper and would definitely not cost that much to replace but the main problem is that they have lost the inventory form which I filled in when I moved in where I noted this damage. I have complained to no avail and I am being punished for their incompetence or simply the fact that they are pretending to have lost my inventory form so that they can charge me to replace this carpet. Broadgate Park is absolutely notorious for only caring about making vast sums of money and not caring about the wellbeing of the students who live there. A minor problem was the situation with receiving mail at Broadgate Park. The thing which I originally didn't like (but which may be commonplace in some blocks of flats) is that you don't have your own postbox you have to share it with everyone in your flat. Obviously this is not a desirable situation if you expect to receive sensitive documents in the post or have people living in your flat who are less than honest. To make things more difficult the postman who delivers post to Broadgate Park is often less than thorough in this job and post is often delivered to the wrong box or the wrong building meaning that you have no way of getting it. When ordering items off the internet which are to be delivered by courier it can become very difficult. The delivery men (usually) cannot gain access to the buildings and the buzzers outside of the buildings which are there for this exact reason never worked. I often saw delivery man standing outside angrily pressing the buzzers and getting no response. Reception refuse to take parcels for students which I find odd as the halls on campus would do this for the people who lived there. The result of this was students having to wait outside all day for delivery vans to arrive which is not the best situation to be in when you have lectures to go to or it is raining. Further problems are that the oven they give you to cook in the studio apartments is far from adequate. It takes twice as long to cook some meat products in there than in a normal oven. They are also prone to breaking and overheating as they are given very little ventilation. When I moved in my "oven" was filled with dirt and the lightbulb thing inside was smashed which seemed very dangerous to me (also proof that they don't check the flats very thoroughly before the arrival of new students). A minor problem was that the electricity would often be tripped because of something someone else in your flat would do and this could mean your computer gets switched off all the time which obviously isn't good for it but also ends up with you losing your work. Then you have to go to reception and it takes ages for them to come and fix it and you often end up left without electricity. The most disgusting problem was the infestation of silver fish. This was not a problem when I lived the Spruces but was terrible when I lived in Redwoods. I rang the reception about it and they casually said that they were aware of the problem and they could probably send a guy round to spray the edges of the room but I am probably not hoovering enough. It is not very nice to wake up in the night and have silver bugs running around your bedside table and walking around your "wet room" floor. They also get into your food and at one point I was completely put off eating by this problem. If Broadgate Park know that they have an infestation of bugs in one of their blocks they should sort it out before allowing new students to move in and not expect us to live like this. To top it all off the reception staff are the most miserable and rude people I have ever encountered. The maintenance staff are all lovely and I cannot fault them but I do not understand how the receptionists got their jobs in the first place. Beside the fact that they are terrible at what they do as I mentioned above and cannot properly organise the operation they are incredibly unhelpful when you have a problem and are often just downright rude both on the phone and in person. When you visit the reception they are often too busy chatting or eating to deal with you anyway. The number which I was given in order to contact the 24 hour tutor was actually some poor woman's telephone number who, when I called, said that Broadgate had been circulating her phone number to students mistakenly and she had often been getting calls in the middle of the night. I have also tried to call reception in the night time with no answer so it is far from a 24 hour service. Overall I would definitely not recommend Broadgate Park as a good place to stay during your time at Nottingham University. I certainly will not be staying there in my final year. Broadgate Park
by Sarah-at-Notts very very bad experience there.... Parents do NOT send your children there.... The rooms are awful, very thin walls so they won't be able to concentrate on exams, the staff are poor and I was treated terribly by this company.... No words to describe, I would give no rating if I could. Pros: none Cons: staff treat ... you badly, over-priced, dirty corridors, sick in corridors, loud music, thin walls, internet often broken, fire alarms throughout the night, flats broken into, rude reception, electric goes often, tiny rooms. disgusting in general. Headline: Parents do NOT send your children to that horrible place, it will cause them problems with their hard earned degrees. Summary: Terrible conditions and very rude staff. I am not usually so harsh, but that place really warrants the review. I warn you, and think people should know so at least they do not have to suffer in that disgusting excuse for accommodation. Halls Of Residence At The University Of Derby
by Beth21 When I was at university in my first year I loived at Sir Peter Hilton. The Halls themselves were laking in comparison to my friends Halls at other university. I never knew anyone at Unievrsity in Derby to have the luxury of an en-suite, but all my frends at other universitys seemed to have them.The layout of Peter Hilton was that you ... had a flat, which had 6 bedrooms, a kitechen, a toilet and a shower room. The bedrooms were of a good size, you have a single bed, which is a pain but its not overally uncomfortable, you get a big wardrobe, a sink/ wash area and a big desk. Its very basic but it works nicely fior all the things you'd actually take to university with you. In third year i lived at St Christophers and this was identical to Sir Peter Hilton. The kitechen area again was big and you have a table with 6 seats, so you can all eat together. You get a small fridge freezer, which causes arguements, so half a drawer each in the freezer. I had a mini fridge in my room fullof drinks so i could keep food in the big fridge. The shower area and toilers were really basic, i ended up missing baths. In terms of location Sir Peter Hilton, Princess Alice and Nunnery Court are in central town area and on the bus route which is very handy. Everything is really close. St Christophers is on Ashbourne Road, next to BlockBusters, its quite far out, and its only on the number 5 bus route which is longer. When at St Christophrs i always walked to uni, which took around half an hour, was good to get some fresh air! I never lived at Nunnery court but a freind did, the rooms were alot smaller than the rooms at st christophers or Peter Hilton, the kitchen was also smaller, it felt really stuffy. I also had freinds at Princess Alice and the rooms there also felt smaller. I lived in a hpouse in my second year and I wouldnt recommend that, halls work out alot cheaper and less argumentative. Finding a clean and good house is hard, there are a great deal of cra**y terraces in Derby, and landlords charge you a lot to live in them. I paid £200 a month in a horrendous 6 bedrrom place on Crompton Streetin Derby, it was clod and dirty when we moved in, we even got burgled, as did all 3 of my tennants homes on 3 differemt streets, in the space of a week, odd huh?! I now live in a well secured new built flat for the same amount! Overall Derby's halls are pretty old fashioned when you compare them to halls at Brunel or Hertfordshire, but they're a great social environment, i met some of my best friends in Halls, so no regrets from me.
