Advantages: Many nearby facilities
Disadvantages: No posters on walls
For my first year at Cardiff Uni, I stayed at Senghennydd Road. It was my first choice of accomodation and as I'm a foreign student, I got my choice. Seng Rd is very well located for a number of people. It's about 5 minutes walking distance from all the major student places. It's 5 minutes from the town centre, making it conveniant for shopping and a relaxing afternoon. It's 5 minutes from the student's union, making it practicle for night outs and it's 5 minutes from the engineering dept, maths bldg, main bldg and psychology bldg. The accomodation itself is very small compared to others. But less than a minute walking distance is Senghennydd Court halls of residence where you can meet a lot of new friends. The building is about 6 years old now but is still in good shape. The rooms are quite big, but a big corner is taken from the en-suite bathroom. So you get your own toilet, shower and sink. But you are responsible to keep them clean. About twice a year there are checks on the cleaness of bathrooms and if after having had a warning you do not clean your bathroom, you'll be fined. So checks are quite strict. Each room has a window with double glazing (very good soundproofing) and furniture. You'll have a desk, chair, bed and closet. Of course you can add more things to your room to make you feel at home, but you can't hang posters on walls as they are a cause of fires. When rooms are checked, you shouldn't have any posters appart those on the noticeboard. The kitchens differ in size depending on the number of students sharing it. The kitchen I had to share was very small and had no window. Therefore there was a lot of condensation when someone started cooking and it caused our food to go off quicker than written on the expiry date. The students occupying the rooms were very nice, but I can't promise that they will be in future years. The atmosphere in the
building is very good. As there are less than 100 students, you get to know a lot of people. A meeting was organized at the start of the year to get to know eachother. I thought it was a very good initiative. Local shops are available nearby. There are several mini supermarkets that open very late. If you have a hungry stomach and can't cook, there are take-aways nearby too. You have the choice from different kebab shops, fish and chips or indian tawe-away. There are barber's shops in the area too (for gentlemen only). If you don't want to go to the student's union, there are several pubs around the araea. I recommend you going to "The End" as it's probably the cheapest one in the area. All in all, I liked my first year in Senghennydd Road and if you're studying engineering, law, maths or psychology, I recommend you apply to stay at Seng Rd.
