Advantages: luxury accomodation, great people, close to town.
Disadvantages: only being able to live there for one year!
When I applied to study at the University of Brighton in 2008, I put down Phoenix halls as my first choice. This is mainly because they had en suite and were closer to town. Unlike many I was successful in getting my first choice.
On the day of the big move, I did not know what to expect. Other than what I'd seen on the website and stories I'd heard from friends living in halls of residence across the country, this was a complete mystery. I didn't know who I would be sharing a kitchen with, whether these people would become my friends for life, or if I'd even manage to last the year; 200 miles from home and the first time I'd be away from my family.
Wow, was I glad I'd chose halls as an option. Phoenix was like staying in a hotel. About 10 minute walk to the Lanes and town. 15 minutes to Grand Parade campus and 25 mins to Moulsecoomb- walking. (5 mins to both on the bus.) If you study at Falmer then be prepared to get the bus for a 20-30 minute journey.
The rooms were fairly big with a single bed, a large desk with drawers, a separate chest of drawers/dressing table and a cupboard style wardrobe.
The en-suite was larger than I expected with a shower, a toilet and sink w/ mirror. It wasn't too difficult to maintain cleanliness as the floor was easy to clean and the vent in there meant it wouldn't get too mouldy. (Although I did have to buy mould spray at the end of the year).
The kitchen was shared amongst 8 of us, but some flats only shared between 6 or 7. It's not a problem though as each person is allocated a numbered cupboard and there are 2 fridge freezers to share!
We were extremely lucky to be the 'penthouse' flat, with amazing views of Brighton town and a distant sea view.
The staff at Phoenix were sufficient. We had a cleaner that cleaned the communal area of kitchen/seating area. They would come in twice a week and mop about... but be prepared to do the bulk of the cleaning yourself.
Security guards available 24/7... sometimes you'd love them, but don't expect to be throwing crazy parties because you will get shut down straight away!!
The common room is located in C block. As are the vending machines, office, security guards. The common room has a ping pong table, a television and the laundretter (which has 5 washers and 5 dryers).
The halls are set out in Blocks. A- E. C is the main and biggest. A and B are large and then D and E are smaller. Each one has flats which are numbered. And then you will have an individual room number.
If you get a place at Phoenix then be very excited about what is to come and make the most of Freshers week.

Summary: Just might be the best year of your life.
