Advantages: small, community atmosphere, good parties can be arranged

Disadvantages: a little too far out of the centre

DONT CHOOSE POLLOCK HALLS--- is the key advice i was given and should be given to any student looking at places to stay for their first year. Pollock Halls are outrageously expensive, the food provided is terrible and the whole place is populated by boring, loud, obnoxious yahs.

Instead i suggest looking into self catering flats provided by the university. I stayed in Fraser Court in my first year and it was a good lesson in living with flat mates and indeed away from home. It was a brilliant way of meeting people and had a lovely community atmosphere. I shared with three other girls in small, but cosy flat. There was a good garden area out the back, perfect for bbqs and lying around in the summer.
The only downside is that is slightly further out than most flats, but worth the walk for the location, in front of arthurs seat. It is by Pollock which is useful if any friends live there or you need to go to the halls offices. It is also located across from a good pub (always a must in freshers year! ) and next to a gym and swimming pool.

I loved my time there and it was a good place to start my uni life.

Summary: loved it!

Did you stay in Pollock for an entire year?

Just wondering as I know they offer it as a place to stay for short periods of time over summers etc and generally then the experience is better. However from the general consensus of friends that lived in Pollock for their freshers year, the view was what I stated unfortunatly.

Thank you for the advice, I will get round to updating the review with your suggestions :)

If its in front of Arthurs Seat, is it longer to get to the main hub of Edinburgh University up by Teviot Hall than Pollock Halls? I think you;ll find the distance is shorter. I found Pollock Halls amazing - and they didnt let me stay there when I was a student because I wasn't foreign and therefore couldnt be ripped off.

SO when I did get to stay there for my graduation (PGDE LAST YEAR) I found the experience a lot more consumer friendly; I found the food great; mix of food both for meat eaters and vegetarians, the accomodation was superb compared to what I was used to (UNITE!) whilst the wardens were very friendly and the whole place completely different to what you make out.

A bit more info to your review would be good here. Self catering usually means its cheaper, so how are the prices for Fraser Court, - what did you pay at the time? Are all the flats designed the same? What are the rooms like? Whats the space like? Is it all modern with good features in general? Bit more info would add salt to your review.

If you update your review pls let me know.
