Advantages: You will meet loads of new folk in these halls.
Disadvantages: You might not get the ones you selected.
I myself lived in strathlyce residency halls for my first year of Uni and loved every minute of it.
You are guaranteed halls if you live over 25 miles from Glasgow and i have a few recommendations which i will list in a bit.
The halls themselves are all very practical for the University and allow students to get up late and miss class, very handy after a night at the Strathclyde Union. Everyone at the halls are friendly and with their own security service they are very safe as well, something which is important to people when moving to a strange city.
Some of the halls are as following :
Chancellors Halls - this is where i stayed, ensuite rooms and some rooms have double beds, i was lucky enough to get a double bed room. Are slightly more expensive than other halls but when you include all your electricity, internet and heatng bills they work out good for students.
James Gould - the newest of the halls and the most modern, same price as Chancellors and are also ensuite. Clean and nice to live in, however Chancellors is about 50m closer to the Uni.
Birkbeck - these halls have a bad reputation due to them being the cheapest of the halls at Strathclyde and this reputation does suit these halls. Dirty and small, with shared toilets and constant fire alarms at nights should be enough to put people off staying in these halls if they get the chance.
I know there is alot more halls at Strathclyde but these are the 3 main ones, except james Blyth, which are also very nice, however contain alot of foreign students.
I hope you like my review of Strathclyde halls and have as a good a time as i did in them.
Summary: Stay here in first year if you can.
