Advantages: The Todd, Locality

Disadvantages: Regulations, Clinical-feel

The first thing most Strathclyde students will tell you when selecting halls is AVOID BIRKBECK!!! I will explain in a moment.

If attending the John Anderson (city centre) campus, you have the choice of catered or self-catered halls. The catered halls are called Baird Hall, and are on Sauchiehall Street, a 20 minute walk from campus. The only advantages of Baird are, of course the food provided, and it is meant to have a 'community atmosphere'. However, I believe the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. Most Baird residents have to share their room, normally with a stranger, which can always be a risk. The rooms are not meant to be very nice, or comfortable, perhaps because the building is quite old. Meals are also served at a set time, so if you aren't there, no dinner. Baird are also the halls furthest away from university. However it is practically next door to the Garage :)

The self catered halls are part of the campus village, which basically means they are right next to all the teaching buildings, and therefore no more than 5 minutes from any classes or the library OR the union!!!

There is accomodation for 2000 people on campus, which provides a really nice environment. There is also a very friendly pub, the Todd, restaurant, laundry and a shop.

There are 8 different halls that vary in facilities, number of people per flat, and size. The most expensive, and nicest halls are James Young and Chancellors Halls. Each room has an en-suite bathroom with toilet and shower. The flat is rather homely in comparison to many of the others, and with decent decorations, they are a nice place to live in. They also provide a TV unlike many of the others.

James Goold, although in the same price range and category as James Young and Chancellors are not as nice. This is probably because they are newer, and were built to be slightly smaller and accomodate more people. The living space is really a bit too small for 6 peopl
e. The en-suite bathrooms also feature a rather odd shower which must be seen to be believed.

Thomas Campbell, James Blyth and Forbes halls are ok. They are smaller than the previously mentioned halls, with slightly inferior amenities, but they are adquate. (as long as your flat mates will help keep it clean, because they can get mingin' pretty quickly, especially as they have no cleaning ladieslike JY, Chancellors and JG.

Birkbeck are disgusting. The first and oldest halls on campus. They are small, cramped, ugly, dirty and have poor furniture. Avoid them at all costs.
