Advantages: Great location - right next to shops and pubs, Staff are really friendly, great way to meet people once ur settled

Disadvantages: Old building - not for those who like their home comforts, Catered and the food isn't up to much, Sharing a room is definitely not for everyone

Last year i stayed in the Halls of Residence at the University of Strathclyde. Strathclyde Uni has a policy that students are only offered accommodation if they live outwith 25 miles of the University - unfortunately i live about 20 miles away from Glasgow and as i was not offered accommodation my only option was to wait until the last minute and see if they had any places left. A few weeks before i was due to start my course i recieved a letter offering me a place in Baird Hall, the University's only catered halls which also happen to be off campus (strathclyde have a large number of student flats located next to the university - highly recommended).

I moved through excited and nervous with no idea what it would be like. I was sharing a room which made me worry that i wouldn't get on with my room-mate. When i moved in i was kind of surprised at how old the building was and how much work was needed done. It's not the nicest of places to stay...

The location was great though - right in the middle of Glasgow's Sauchiehall street. Very handy for nights out - you never have to take a jacket or pay for a taxi home!

The food in the halls wasn't up to much though and over the year i stopped eating there and spent a fortune buying my own food. Not good when you're already skint.

Luckily, i got on with my room-mate really well and although i found it difficult to make friends in the first place, i did meet a lot of people who i know i will be good friends for life with.

Baird Hall is a good place to live if you are very sociable, but not so good if you're shy and find it difficult to meet people. It's a great place to live for people who enjoy clubbing too - probably the best place in Glasgow.

The distance from the uni is bad for lazy people - at least a 20 mins walk to the nearest building.

Although i hated it at first, i guess it did sort of grow on me as the year went
on. I had some good times there but i'm still glad that this year some good friends and myself have been offered a place in one of the uni flats - i don't think i could have handled another year there!

Good luck to anyone going this year!

Catered halls food is always so awful. Much better they don't bother and charge less, eh?

Good review. I stay at home as I'm close to the building!
