Advantages: security in every hall, packages/correspondance collected
Disadvantages: Wearmouth Hall -> noisy
Having spent 3 years of my life studying in Sunderland, I had a good look at the different Halls of Residence provided by the university. The following 4 are the ones I satyed at and, thus, the ones I can state my opinion for mainly from my personal experience. Clanny House: fairly good sized rooms, opposite to the hospital, mini cabs & bus station just outside the residences block - an above than average space for students, security present Wearmouth Hall: next to Edinburgh building, small rooms, if I remember well 7-8 floors high, suitable for the "sociable" student - not a suitable place for studying, security present Scotia Quay: 10-15 mins from St. Peter's Campus, beautiful medium/large rooms, network connection - the best halls of residence(!!), security present The Presinct: 5 mins from Edinburgh Building, medium/small rooms - an average space, security present In general, none of the Halls of Residence mentioned above are below par. One should probably visit them and especially have a llok at the room he/she is appointed before accepting it. All except Wearmouth Hall are without any meals. In the case of Wearmouth Hall a lunch in included in the monthly rent.

- 24/07/01 Sorry, got to disagree with you guys. In my own experience I hated my first year, i lived in 'The Forge' and whilst the accomodation itself was nice, it must have been built in one of the roughest areas in the City - the same goes for the Precinct!
Althou gh to be fair, both Scotia Quay and Pans bank sounded nice, it's pot luck as to whether or not you'll get them!
Personally I prefered rented accomodation in Roker, nice area close to beach etc. I'd highly recommend you look VERY carefully at the surroundings of your accomodation as well as the buildings themselves though 8-) |

- 12/03/01 I would largely agree with this opinion, however, you forgot to mention Panns Bank which is usually reeserved for first year students (Freshers). The halls at Sunderland are better than any I visited when I was looking for a University. And although the price is quite high, I think you'll find it competitive with other universities around the country. Scotia Quay is excellent, although the most expensive self-catering halls. Wearmouth is catered. Sorry to keep going on about Scotia, but each room is en-suite, has it's own mini fridge, network connection and internal phone. The halls all have an internal phone system, so you can ring your friends for free just by dialing the four-digit extension of the flat or room they live in. Also you can get a phone card which allows you to use the internal phones to dial out and you get a bill at the end of the month for any call charges incurred (Great for ordering pizza delivery direct to your halls of residence). Also, you can give your parents the extension number and they can dial in.
All in all, I would say the halls at Sunderland have been well planned and designed for students no matter what age or living experience.
I give accomodation at Sunderland a big thumbs UP!!! |
