Halls Of Residence At The University Of YorkNewest Review: ... a desk and a sink with not much else. The kitchens are stocked with 2 fridges a microwave and an oven with hob attachment. Overall I found 2 fridges not to be enough, the microwave to be unreliable at best and the oven to be outdated and ineffective. On the plus side they are cleaned once a week by the university staff. Another downside I found from my personal experience is that the ... more |

As people have said it is a lottery, if you manage to get one of the newer rooms in James college then congratulations but in most of the other colleges the rooms have not changed since the day they were built. In my freshers year I was in Wood Court in Halifax College. The rooms are rather basic you get a bed, a desk and a sink with not much else. The kitchens are stocked with 2 fridges a microwave and an oven with hob attachment. Overall I found 2 fridges not to be enough, the microwave to be unreliable at best and the oven to be outdated and ineffective. On the plus side they are cleaned once a week by the university staff. I went to York University for a year, from October 2002 to October 2003 (when I decided to take a 'gap year' that I am yet to return from). I can honestly say that when I saw my halls for the first time I wanted to run away and never return. I was placed in Goodricke D block. It is probably the worst accommodation on campus (rivalled only by Goodricke C block which is also a dump) and could well be the worst accommodation in the country. The block is made of breeze blocks and no attempt has been made to diguse this. The rooms are the size of cells. there is (just) enough space for a single bed, a desk, a sink and a bizarrely position wardrobe. There is not ... Read the complete review

I really love York uni, but its accommodation is not its selling point. Halls at York fall into two very distinct categories: dump Prisoner Cell Block H next to a couple of classy apartments and it gives you a taste of the campus. Unfortunately there are millions of prisoner blocks and relatively few nice new blocks. A couple of years ago they introduced differential rates for rent: so the good news is that you will pay a less if you end up in an economy room instead of a nice en-suite (at the moment it ranges from £55.65 to £72.45 per week which includes lighting, heating and cleaning) . The accommodation is divided up into colleges: James, Alcuin, Halifax, ... Read the complete review

In general, I would say that the Halls of Residence at York University are pretty poor. They've remained basically unchanged since they were built in the late 1970's - the room are medium-sized to small, and it's an odd feeling lying in a bed that has been used by different people for the last 30 years. Generally it's about 8 people to a kitchen, although it varies depending on your college. There are no microwaves so all the cooking has to be done on these terrible combi-oven things, about the size of a microwave. Rooms are cleaned once a week, which is good, and bed-linen is washed every fortnight - for clothes each college has a laundrette where it ... Read the complete review
