Advantages: Good secure accomodation for young students.
Disadvantages: There are some, but life is full of them too.
Halls of residence, what a thing to do a review on, there are as many halls as there are educational establishments. I am sure some are good, and some are bad, there are as many opinions of the subject as there are Dooyoo'ers (Is that a word?)
I will speak of the only one I have had experience of, Coventry, and also give my own opinion on Halls in general. My experience comes from my Son attending Coventry University, and like many other Uni's he was required to stay in Halls for his first year.
I must say that there is a minimum standard in these places, and by and large, most reach it, there are of course times when things are not as planned, but this is life.
The Halls are there to provide a minimum of shelter, heating, light and power for students, they also offer internet access, waste facilities, bathing and sleeping requirements, drying rooms, ironing boards, and relaxation areas, anything else has to be provided by the students themselves.
Security is in attendance of course, and the building is maintained, kept clean, and repairs done as soon as practical.
The needs of the student are looked after, right down to peoviding a Doctor they can register with during their stay. There are also other services which can be called upon, from a Vicar, (or other denomination) someone is on hand to let the students in, in the event of them losing their key, emergency plumbers, electricians, and window boarding up services are also there if and when required.
The students are to provide their own, bedding, computors, clothing, food, cutlery and crockery, kettles, toasters and other similar items. The whole idea of Halls rather than a dormitory and cafeteria style accomodation, is to promote the idea of independant living, for people, many who have never left home, so they will need a certain amount of looking after, while still having their share on independance.
I am a great beleiver in this regime, and many students would be lost without Halls, they would simply not be able to cope with the hassle of finding "digs" in bad areas, having no security, and feeling very much alone.
In short, the Halls system provides a roof over the heads of some young students, who are then free to conduct their studies, and drinking parties of course, as this is also part of life!
Summary: A good system by & large.
