Advantages: Close to lectures, Get to know everyone
Disadvantages: Chips!
In my personal opinion, the best halls at Hope are those on the CND site. These include Angela, Austin, Sherwin, Newman & Andrew. They’re a little old (my room had orange curtains which looked a bit sad but actually kept the room nice & dark) but close to the canteen and most of the lectures!
The rooms all contain a desk & chair, a single bed, a bedside cabinet, a fitted wardrobe and a washbasin. There’s a shower and a bath plus 2 toilets between approximately 8 rooms (based on Angela Hall). There’s also a small kitchen with a hob. A cleaner visits your room weekly – if you would prefer her not to clean your room, you can leave a sign on your door requesting this.
If you cant get accommodation on CND site, try St Katherine’s across the road, close to the Student Union. It is possible to get cable on St Katherine’s side, but there are also pay phones all over the campus. The rooms at St Katherine’s look marginally smaller and those near the chapel get disturbed by bells – however, they are charged less rent as a consequence.
The catered halls at Childwall provide breakfast & an evening meal Monday to Friday, and lunch on Saturday and Sunday. You might not want to get up early for breakfast, but it is the best meal they provide! (Cereals, toast, croissants and cooked breakfast, tea, coffee and orange juice mmm)
The evening meals are basic, but hey, you’re a student. There’s a salad bar or hot meals section. On the salad bar you can expect to find jacket potatoes with a range of fillings (cheese/beans/butter), as well as the usual salad items. A word of warning – sometimes the potatoes would get gunk from the cheese or beans on them and since I don’t eat cheese or beans it was quite off-putting. The hot meal counter provides some kind of meat (I’m not much of a meat eater so don’t ask me, although they did hot dogs once and everyone was delighted!),
a vegetarian alternative, potatoes (chips, chips and more chips although they sometimes provide roast potatoes or potato croqettes) and vegetables (I did have a soft spot for the carrots!). At the end of the hot food counter you will find bread (often a bit stale, but choose between a slice of white or brown) and then desserts (scones/cake/fruit). These aren’t bad.
Generally you will find something to eat so you can’t complain. The dinner ladies are friendly and if you have strange requests (just chips please was my most common request!) they will try to help you out – I usually got extra potatoes because I wasn’t having meat. Sunday lunch is usually fairly tasty so get out of bed and wander down to the canteen. At Thanksgiving they even do a special meal for American students, and just before you break up for Christmas there is a Christmas dinner (or a wander down to the chippy for me!) The main complaint about the catering at Hope is the chips – the foreign students’ pained expressions at teatime were a most common sight. By the way, I left halls in 1997 so don’t blame me if any of the details aren’t 100% accurate. I expect you will still find chips, chips and more chips if nothing else.
For self-catering halls I’ve heard the halls at Everton are great - ideal for Fine Art & Design students. The rooms are en-suite and there are ample cooking facilities. The refurbished halls at Aigburth are reported to be nice too, but they are a bit out of the way.
One word of warning: my friend’s girlfriend teaches at Hope and told us that there is a Special Needs Hall – i.e. a hall for those with visual, hearing & mobility problems. Now it has been argued this is because Hope can’t afford to adapt all their halls and it is easier to place all people with special needs in one hall, but this seems like terrible segregation to me.

ind vending machines in CND main building selling hot & cold drinks (the cappuccino is pretty tasty), snacks (crisps & chocolate) and sandwiches.
· There is a separate canteen over at St Katherine’s side inside the student union. They sell hot meals at lunchtime and during some evenings.
· The student union bar (last time I checked) has a kitchen – they sell pizzas and snacks, as well as crisps behind the bar.
