Simpsons 25 Piece Figurines Set Series 4-6
by benlepensive
Possibly the greatest comedy show ever invented if not the best cartoon show ever, The Simpsons has long been one of my staple programme diets. It is one of those cartoons where you can shut off and enjoy someone else's misfortunes for a while! This twenty five piece figure set is a must have item for fans of the show. You can buy them ... online for about thirty odd pounds and if you are lucky, like me, you might just nab one cut price at auction. They come in different series, this one is the series four to six range so you get characters from those series'.
Each figure might only measure a couple of inches, but the idea of getting twenty five figures in one swoop is brilliant. I used to spend ages trying to find figures of the Simpsons and never had much luck. This way of buying also groups them by series so you can fine tune which ones you are buying and also keep them in the helpful carrying case.
The toys are all very well designed with fixed poses and bright vibrant colours. The lack of movement is going to annoy some fans, but for display purposes they tick most boxes for me. We do have some obvious choices, like Homer and Mr Burns, but the set goes some way to include some much rarer characters and this is the bit that excites me. I was particularly pleased to see Dr Hibbert and a naked Barney! Be sure to check out Lenny and Carl as well, Homer's long suffering workmates. The figures are presented how you would see them in the show, so you get to see Bart clad as Batman and Homer in his undies, which is odd yet also appealing! There is a good range of characters and a good balance of male to female too, so you will get Patty and Selma and then Radioactive Man. I think this would make a great gift for a Simpsons fan and I think this is a very cool and stylish set. Read the complete review |

Kenner Aliens Space Marine ATAX
by benlepensive
This is one of the more unusual toys in the Aliens lineup. I remember getting this figure and being puzzled by it, purely because it does not actually appear in the film. Most of the figures in the range are based on real characters, like Ripley and Bishop and then we have an assortment of aliens who may or may not have been there hidden ... in the shadows! This fellow was never in the film, a chap called O Malley with an Atax disguise. Basically it's a figure with a strap-on suit, meant to disguise himself as an alien, so he can go into battle with aliens.
The toy can be bought boxed for about ten pounds or loose for about five pounds. The figure is an odd looking man with red hair and a knowing look on his face. His outfit is very futuristic looking and he looks like he could have come from any superhero movie. The figure can be posed at the head, arms and legs before he has disguise on. Be careful of the spikes on the shoulders though, they are quite sharp!
When you strap on his gear, you can put on various pieces of armour onto the torso, arms and legs and build the outfit bit by bit. The parts all strap on well though and when finished, he looks superb. It is a heavy duty suit of armour and very well constructed. The figure balances well too when he has it on, so he will stand up for battle and not fall over.
Despite not appearing in the films, this marine is very intriguing and a definite buy for the fans of the films. He might be tricky to track down in shops these days so search online sites to see if you can find him. A well made toy and great fun! Read the complete review |

Kenner Aliens Hive Wars Acid Alien
by benlepensive
The Aliens films are some of the favourite movies, excluding the ones where they turned into 'Alien vs Predator.' The best of the bunch in my opinion has to be the second films 'Aliens.' It was not until the mid nineties though that toymaker Kenner decided to start producing action figures from the film. Given that 'Aliens' does indeed ... have lots of aliens and lots of marines it seemed a good place to start. The films are aimed at a much older audience though and the figures are designed for younger kids, though I have to question this!
This alien is the nasty Hive Wars Acid Alien and he is one of the later figures in the lineup to have been produced. First off, great packaging and really cool colours which bring to mind the scenery from the film, so this is an instant draw for me as a collector and film fan. The figure inside can be posed at the limbs and bears a likeness to the very original alien from the first film. His body is spindly and slim and the head is a good elongated shape, just like the HR Giger creation. There is a shiny surface to the alien and the bodywork is smooth and refined.
The model benefits from some bold articulation on the torso and this brings it to life and there is some definition on the legs and head too. The only downsides are the colours, which are quite one dimensional and the spindly legs make him hard to balance. The toy is a decent size though and he stands at several inches in height and looks authentic and monstrous. A must-have item for the fans of the films and a consideration for the casual action figure buyer. Read the complete review |
