Neca Bioshock Big Daddy Figure
by princesschickpea
Action figure tie-ins for movies, comic and video games are notoriously hit and miss. There are plenty of poor quality figures out there, with terrible sculpts and bad paint jobs. This Big Daddy figure, from the Bioshock game, is not one of them, thankfully. I bought this figure for my other half - we're both huge fans of the Bioshock ... games, so maybe it was a little bit for myself as well :P It cost around £14.00 from Amazon.
There are several variations of the Big Daddy character in the games. This is the Bouncer version seen in the first game, complete with drill. And boy, is he big! He's approx 6.2 inches wide and 8.5 inches tall and has substantial weight to him. The construction is solid, with no loose joints, and in fact, the joints are all cleverly designed so you get none of that protuding ball and socket hip joint problem that is often present on superhero action figures. While I'm not sure of how many points of articulation there are exactly, he is very easy to pose, with moving arms, elbows, knees and wrists. He doesn't come with any extra accessories other than what is seen in the photo.
The paint job on the figure is something else completely. The worn diving suit and rust mottled helmet are all beautifully captured and surprisingly true to the game art. The folds in the suit are rendered well, and the textures of the different parts are all perfectly detailed. Perhaps there is a benefit in not having to sculpt and paint a human face, and this is hands down the best paint job I've seen on an action figure at this price in a long long time.
In all, this is a great buy for any Bioshock fan. The price is great and the figure itself looks like an expensive statue or maquette when it's displayed. Neca have done an amazing job on all the figures in the Bioshock frachise, and you won't see quality like this at so affordable a price very often. My advice to any fan is to snap him up if you can - you won't be disappointed. Read the complete review |

Neca Resident Evil Archives Zombie Figure
by chickiepoo
My son bought this out of his birthday money at the beginning of this this. We shopped all over the town centre, then somehow ended up in the shop forbidden planet. My son saw these straight away, but I was not very keen on him buying them when I saw the price. It cost 17.99 just for this one, he did buy a few in the end ... loll.
This one he bought came with the action figure and also a doberman dog which was in the form of a zombie. The zombie figure is made out of a really solid plastic and feels pretty heavy to hold, the zombie looks just like one of the film, with a bloodied face, bitten arms and blood all over his shirt, with his teeth showing in a scary way, as if he is ready to pounce and attack. The doberman is just the same with bite marks on it and bones showing.
The action figure is not really movable, his body will move really slightly around but not by much so there is no point trying, but his arms do move up and down. The doberman does not have any movable parts at all.
I think the action figures are a bit more of a collection toy rather than a playable toy, as the zombie does come with holes in his feet, and a little black plastic board which you stick into the feet and the action figure will stand up. I feel the price of this was far too high for my son to pay as a toy, but I told him it was his money to spend on what he wanted. The action figure does seem very durable and my son loves it to play with, so I suppose it can be used as a toy or as a collectable, but it just seems far too much to pay for a toy, also it might be a little gory for some kids, but my son loves resident evil, so I saw no harm in it. Neca The Dark Crystal Chamberlain Figure
by benlepensive
The Dark Crystal is definitely one of the darkest films to have come from the Henson camp. Made in the eighties with no real humans in the film, the film relied solely on muppets, puppets and animatronics. As it stands, the film has held up well over the years and remains a treat for children and adults alike. One of the best characters ... in the film is the evil Chamberlain, a Skeksi. He is a bird like creature, who walks around sneering and moaning a lot.
The figure has been made into an action figure by Neca and the toy will delight fans who have long hankered after figures from the film. Chamberlain would always have been my first choice for a figure, purely because he is such a bizarre character. The toy measures a few inches in height and has been made from a plastic resin. There is a little bit of movement with him, though it must be said that his thick overflowing gowns prevent dramatic movement of the limbs.
The head is well designed with his beak like features glaring out at you and he looks sneery and wise. The dinosaur esque face appelas to me and I do like the way his neck cranes forward. The attention to detail on the costume is very well handled. The dusky dirty look of the clothes is carried off very well with some lovely detailing and texturing on the cloak and dramatic sweeping robes that shrowd his body in mystery. While the costume might be fixed, you can appreciate the colours well and he also stands up on his own, making him ideal for display purpose.
The toy can be bought online for about ten pounds and is a superb item for movie buffs. As I love sci fi and fantasy he is right up my street and the presentation of the toy is also effective. Very interesting and also unusual enough to raise eyebrowes. Read the complete review |
