Advantages: interesting features

Disadvantages: they look different

Ralph McQuarrie is an American artist who has designed many Star Wars concepts in the last twenty years. Some of his Christmas cards are highly sought after items. There is a particularly endearing Christmas card featuring C3PO dressed up as Santa Claus in front of an open log fire. McQuarrie has also lent his skills to designing 'You're Moving House' greetings cards and has assisted Lucas on the design work of some of the Star Wars movies.

It seems fitting then that McQuarrie saw some of his work take on a plastic form, in the guise of action figures. Fans will no doubt be thrilled to know that you can buy a C3PO and R2D2 as a doublepack, based on McQuarrie's conceptual art.

They do not look quite like the characters we have grown to know in the films. C3PO looks more feminine than before and his features seem to have faded into the ether. He still has the golden colour which rings true, but the overall look of the figure could really be any protocol droid. The face looks distant and jaded, though it does bear a good likeness to his artwork.

R2D2 has changed as well. He has lost some of his blue and white colour scheme and is more greyish silver. This makes him look more futuristic, but again he does not look like the droid from the films anymore. There is great detail on his bodywork though and his legs have been crafted well. Both figures allow for movement, though these two figures are really for die hard collectors who want to complete the action figure range. They come packaged with their exclusive Celebration Europe backer card and will cost you about six pound to buy as new.

Recommended for Star Wars completists only!

Summary: intriguing toys
