“ Manufacturer: Ladybird / Age: 3+ „
My daughter loves playing shops and even has her own till with a bar-code scanner so when several of her toy groceries began to break, many of them being made of cheap, flimsy cardboard boxes, we looked about for suitable replacements and found this set. It basically consists of several plastic items of food complete with a handy yellow shopping basket with red handles and is priced around £5-£6.
The food is great- being made of plastic, it is hard to break and all fairly well-made with a nice selecton of pretend canned produce and fresh fruit and vegetables. Where this product is let down however is that the basket is not very strong! It is true that my daughter tends to overload things, you should see her pretend shopping trolley some days, but even so, we had not had this long before the handles came off and mock groceries spilled out everywhere. Though the handle was easy to fix, just clipping on, it was not long before it snapped off again! I think I am still finding the odd plastic can that has rolled behind the sofa even now!
Luckily there are no sharp protruding edges on the handle when it comes off but it is a bit annoying to say the least as I note the previous reviewer has also mentioned. Luckily our daughter thinks it hilarious (she is known to come out with the line, "Huh, well you're still paying for all that" when we play and this happens) but you would think that a toy designed to be played with by young children could handle a bit more abuse!
Overall, this is a good product. This reviewer just wishes it was a bit stronger!
We brought this for my daughter to go with her shopping trolley it was £6 from very and you can get it in a grocery version or a fruit basket version we choose the fruit basket version to go with the fruit stall she has.
The basket is styled on a regular shopping basket and has 2 handle at the top for little one to hold the basket with. There are small square holes all other the basket they are rather large but not too big as to let anything slip out of it.
It is made of plastic and on the whole is very durable it does look a little cheap but I suppose you get what you pay for and my little girl adores this so she does not seem to mind. It is bright yellow in colour with the lady bird sign printed on the front of the basket and it has red handles. The hands are a good size and is rather thick so little one can easily get a good grip on them.
The basket is a good size for a toddler it is not too big so it would be awkward to be carried around by a small child but it has enough room in it to fit a fair amount of play food toys and as it is very light little one can carry it around very easily even piled to the top with play food.
With this basket we received accessories and unlike a lot of similar products all the accessories we received with this were actually made out of plastic rather than the cardboard boxes.
This is great as it means they are very durable can be given a quick wipe with a cloth to make them look new again and unlike the cardboard boxes you do not have to worry about rough play from toddlers as these are durable and hard wearing just what you need for a toy designed for young hands.
Also as the basket is plastic it can be wiped clean easily. The whole basket it round and there is nothing little one can catch them self on even with the square holes my daughter is accident prone but they are big enough for her not to be able to get her fingers or anything else stuck.
My negative with this is a rather important one the handles broke off within 3 weeks of play they can be put back in and even when they snap out there are no sharp parts or anything that could hurt little one but trying to console my little girl when it breaks and all her shopping ends up over the floor is not nice. She now has got used to it and giggles rather than cries and she still uses it all the time but the handles do let this basket down.
This is actually recommended from 3 years plus but my daughter received it when she was 2 and as there are no small parts I do not see a problem with her having it any earlier she got on really well with it and enjoyed using it.
