Mattel He-Man Skeletor
Advantages: The villain!!
Disadvantages: The mouldings are identical to ther figures!
If you had He Man in your collection of figures from the Masters of the Universe range, then it was also necessary to have Skeletor who is the arch nemesis of He Man. In the animations from the eighties he is voiced in a rather squawky voice that never really did give the impression that he was evil, more of a Jerry Lewis voice than Darth Vader by any means and for this reason the villain was never that much to look at. In fact I always remember Skeletor simply sitting on his throne giving order rather than fighting in combat as Skeletor led an army that each week ordered various evil characters to do there thing while he stayed indoors! Obviously from a merchandising point of view this was a dream as a new character was introduced each week, however there were times that the lead villain would come up against He Man only to have a face off end in what can only be called gentlemanly terms.
The figure itself is in line with the characteristics of the range and appearance is similar from the neck down with regards to other characters as you would expect. The head is different in nature and the head is simply a yellow skull skeleton with in a blue hood and as with the animation the jawbone is detached from the upper skull, however there is no movement at all except the whole head can be moved at the neckline from side to side. Looking at the figure, its obvious that the figure isn't human and I actually have no idea to his origins at all, which these days would be considered to be a missed trick in terms of a back story and fleshing out the character. His flesh is a light blue colour in tone and to be honest apart from the yellow of the skull, everything is in different blue tones. It does look scary and at the time of issue was quite a significant figure in the collections as he was the centre point of evil.
With body armour across the chest plate and winged shoulders as well as the lower torso having a type of gladiatorial fashion to it the figure does, like He Man, have that stance about him that tells you he is ready for combat. The proportions being large, such as the muscles on the arms and the slightly out of proportion legs that are defined as muscle, yet are slightly bent to give a fighting stance. From the front view this gives an appearance of stubbly legs as the bend cannot necessarily be seen, yet from the side the bend makes more sense to be seen. I do like the manner in which he has been fashioned out, the shoulder apparel gives him the commanding overview and doesn't impact movement of the arms. Articulation of the limbs is limited as were all movement in the entire range anyway, here it is the bog standard arms move forward or back and the legs do rotate slightly, although from the waist up the entire upper body has that unique spring-back function that makes combat quite exciting, especially if playing with these in a fighting situation, which to be honest there isn't much else to do with them at all other than pose them due to the lack of movement.
Weapons wise this comes with some nicely sculptured pieces, first of all is the sword. This is an exact replica of the one that comes with He Man, except this is in a nice dark blue rather than the grey. It also has the ability to clip together with the grey sword to become one weapon. In the animation this was explained in some detail and was a notable plot point in the story, however with Skeletor you also get a staff with a nice goats head on top. The staff id just as high as the figure and this is one of Skeletor's better weapons as this again is used in the show as an attacking weapon. Placed together with the sword the figure does look good to simply look at, however with the function of the spring-back body gives the ability to make the fighting a little better than if you had Star Wars figures.
As a kid this was the one figure I had to have and looking back I can see the all too obvious moulding that were used on the majority of the figures, and I think this gives a clear sign that the costs were clearly kept an eye over as the arms and the legs are common with a number of other figures as well.
As I said earlier, this has to be included in any set as the character completes a circle in terms of the range. The character is easily memorable for his appearance and the image has evoked memories of when this was on TV. However the price these days can easily start in the lower thirties and go up high depending on the condition. The figure was packed in a bubble pack and was well protected as even the weaponry was secured inside the plastic packaging and wouldn't be able to come away producing the inevitable rattling and scratch marks on the figure itself. Of course there has to be a hook or an incentive and on the back of the packaging the full range could be seen in some detail, which always acted as a catalyst for the next one to be purchased or additions to Christmas lists.
Overall a necessary addition of a muscled villain that is memorable, Skeletor is also one of the most powerful villains in a toy range as well given the power he has to nurture. A good toy that is getting the stage that it is worth investing in as a collector, although given the extremely buff appearance of some figures today, the original Skeletor would look out of place completely!!!
Summary: A bony adversary!
