Advantages: ideal for moshi fans
Disadvantages: silly misleading packaging
When I received this ready for the start of December, I was initially very disappointed and thinking of sending it straight back due to the packaging, which is misleading to say the least. The back of the box makes it look like from both the photos and the description that the contents are series 1 normal coloured moshlings, most of which we already own. If you believe the picture it seems as if there are only only a couple of Christmas ones; for a fan it looked like an issue, not to mention a waste of money. Further investigation, which involved opening a flap on the box and having a very good look pulling out the tray to see everything, revealed, to my huge relief, a fantastic array of normal sized Moshlings. These include Mr Snoodles made over as a Christmas pudding, a Mini Ben dressed as a present and Iggy in a christmas hat - I think for a 43 year old I maybe know too many moshling names! There are 7 special christmas ones and the rest are moshlings in shades of translucent blue and green - so what looked poor from the packaging turns out to be a really good product.
The box is quite thick and the front folds down to make a display area, no assembly just a window to open every single day of avent and a proper sized christmassy themed moshling inside. The box stands up well without needing any support. The Moshlings can be displayed as you get them on the fold down flap in front of the bit containing the windows all integrated into a scene from one of the streets from the Moshi monsters virtual world. The windows are easily opened by a child and the numbers are clearly printed.
My daughter was absolutely over the moon when she saw the calendar and is enjoying the surprise of getting a different one every day I know, but whoever designed the back of the packaging really should have made it clearer what is inside as there is no way of knowing that this calender is not a total disappointment. If I'd seen it on a shelf rather than buying online I would never have bought it in all honesty. A few reviewers on amazon whose feedback I have read have been so confused by the box they have not been able to find the fold down flap and hence understandably rated it very poorly, so a redesign is really in order I think.
For my daughter though, this is quite simply just a magical calendar and there are no negatives. On the first day when she got an Angel winged horse character who has a Rudolph nose and antlers she really just couldn't believe it and every day she has been thrilled with her Moshling, today she got Mr Jeepers with a Christmas hat and it really made for a great start to the day. For a Moshling fan this is just a fantastic item.
Don't be put off by the ambiguous product description here or the packaging of the box, this is a great advent calendar that any moshi fan is going to love, and actually for 25 moshlings the price is pretty good too, and I would have given it 5 stars were it not for the misleading packaging. If you are the parent of a moshi fan you will understand that there's no price you can put on 25 little bits of plastic happiness, one for each day up to Christmas. Recommended, for what's inside, not the box.
Summary: looked like it might be dud, but actually really good
