My boys have both been totally obsessed with Moshi Monsters since my friend bought them both a collectors tin each last Christmas.
This Rox collection meant very little to me at the time, as did the name Moshi Monsters, and my heart did sink a little seeing the level of plastic fantastic, but my boys instantly fell in love, and so our collection began. My mum has just bought a second Rox tin for my son this Christmas, so I thought I should finally get round to reviewing this item.
For someone just getting into Moshi Monsters, a collectors tin is a great place to start. Most Moshi Monsters come in blind bags, and cost around £1.97 for one in a bag. In these tins you usually get 8 different figures for a price of up to £10. This particular set is currently on amazon for just £5 and I have seen it similarly priced in Tesco recently.
This collection features 8 different Moshlings which are not particularly common. You don't see them often in the blind bags. what makes these special is instead of being coloured in normal colours, they are all one colour. There are 4 colours of plastic in the tin - pink, yellow, blue and green. The Moshlings you get are the same 8, but can be different colours in the different tins, which apparently means that this new tin is different to the first tin because the moshlings are different colours. Very subtle but children do know the difference in such an important matter apparently even though it washed over my head.
Opening the tin, the 8 Moshlings are then presented face up by sitting in a sheet of moulded plastic. In the first tin my sons discarded the plastic and used the tin to house their growing collection, or you can leave it in to keep it all looking a bit neater. The tin is very nice looking - very silvery and sparkly, and it is a lovely way to store the figures. It is not a hinged tin - the lid just sits on the top, but its a secure fit. The tin is reasonably strong unless left on the floor and stood on. Then the shape deforms quite quickly.
In our tin we got the characters Cleo and Blingo in yellow plastic, Roxy and Liberty in blue plastic, Wurley and Pricilla in green and Coolio and Plinky in pink. Each character is all that colour except one or two have small features in black, eg. Blingo is wearing sunglasses and has a little goatee beard and moustache, and the others have eyes if not covered with glasses. The level of detail is still there in the moulding of the plastic, just not picked out by being painted in a different colour.
Each figure is reasonably tough and won't break with normal play. Our dog took a fancy to one or two of the first set liking the hard edges to chew.
Overall, a delightful set for the young collector, and as a parent I like the fact its good value and provides a decent amount of storage, as well as looking good on a shelf. Recommended for all fans - the manufacturer recommendation is 4-10 years old, so I might have a few more years to add to my sons collection yet.
