Action figure tie-ins for movies, comic and video games are notoriously hit and miss. There are plenty of poor quality figures out there, with terrible sculpts and bad paint jobs. This Big Daddy figure, from the Bioshock game, is not one of them, thankfully. I bought this figure for my other half - we're both huge fans of the Bioshock games, so maybe it was a little bit for myself as well :P It cost around £14.00 from Amazon.
There are several variations of the Big Daddy character in the games. This is the Bouncer version seen in the first game, complete with drill. And boy, is he big! He's approx 6.2 inches wide and 8.5 inches tall and has substantial weight to him. The construction is solid, with no loose joints, and in fact, the joints are all cleverly designed so you get none of that protuding ball and socket hip joint problem that is often present on superhero action figures. While I'm not sure of how many points of articulation there are exactly, he is very easy to pose, with moving arms, elbows, knees and wrists. He doesn't come with any extra accessories other than what is seen in the photo.
The paint job on the figure is something else completely. The worn diving suit and rust mottled helmet are all beautifully captured and surprisingly true to the game art. The folds in the suit are rendered well, and the textures of the different parts are all perfectly detailed. Perhaps there is a benefit in not having to sculpt and paint a human face, and this is hands down the best paint job I've seen on an action figure at this price in a long long time.
In all, this is a great buy for any Bioshock fan. The price is great and the figure itself looks like an expensive statue or maquette when it's displayed. Neca have done an amazing job on all the figures in the Bioshock frachise, and you won't see quality like this at so affordable a price very often. My advice to any fan is to snap him up if you can - you won't be disappointed.
