My eldest daughter who is 6 has a fabulous imagination and I wanted to find a toy that she was able to shut herself away in her room and really let her imagination take over. I was talking to a work colleague who explained to me that her daughter played with the Shleich Bayala range from the World of Fantasy. I hadn't previously heard of them but when she started to explain what they were I knew I had seen them around. They also produce the range of small farmyard animals which I had seen for sale in various toy shops. The Bayala range within the World of Fantasy, are fantastical creatures such as fairies, elves, dragons, horses, and unicorns, which can be bought individually to make a set of toys to play with.
For her birthday last year, I set about buying a little collection for her. Although individually they make a good relatively low priced toy (perfect pocket money prices) at around £10, to start a set can be a little pricey as I bought around 6 or 7 items to start with. The thing I like best about these items is the size of them means that if we are going out for a meal or a long car journey, my daughter can fit one or two in a little bag (this figure is around 15 cm tall). This fits well with Schleich's motto of 'Anywhere's a playground'.
The detailing that goes into each and every figure by Schliech is unbelievable. Although a completely different toy, it reminds me very much of the quality you find with Sylvanean Families, and I cannot argue the price that comes with each item.
This particular figure is, in effect, a two piece as the horse and Feya (the fairy) are separate. I will mention however, that because of the position of the fairy, unless you have another horse which is similar in size from the range, the fairy will be difficult to use as the fairy is in a side sitting position on the horse. Feya is also available to buy in a standing position, which we also have, and she is equally as lovely.
As I mentioned, the detailing on these figures is absolutely brilliant, and the fact that each one is hand painted makes me love them even more. They are given real thought and feature detailing such as tattoos and necklaces, all of which are painted on. Her golden hair and pink dress are so girly, and this is one of my daughters favourite fairies from the collection. The horse is equally well thought out with shading around joints and detailing such as flowers on the mane and tail. In fact, once Feya has been taken off the horse, it is just as lovely on its own as it is with Feya sat on its back.
The plastic figure is tough and durable and perfect for children. I would say that the age range of children that will be playing with it, will probably be more aware of how to look after toys anyway. It is nice to know they will last though, and there has been the odd time, when my youngest daughter has 'stolen' them from big sister, and she is a lot rougher with her toys than my eldest! There aren't any small parts on the figures, so this isn't something you need to consider if you have much younger children around.
I do love to watch my daughter play with these figures, and wish they had been around when I was a child.
Currently available for £9.49 on Amazon.
I instantly fell in love with this figurine (and many others if truth be told) when I saw it in the store, it only cost Euro10.99 (X-mas special) so it was mine in an instant! I do feel that this figures are not expensive, especially if you consider what they offer...
I already own a heard of horses from this brand and many other animals (Schleicht really makes beautiful figures). This was the first figure from their Bayala product range - it is a fantasy themed range with fairies, unicorns, dragons, elves and other magical creatures - that I purchased (and believe me it was far from the last one that I purchased).
This is a set of two separate figures, Feya the winged fairy and a nameless beautiful horse. Both figures are really detailed and look realistic. It is top quality sculpting! Each of the figurines is also unique since it is hand painted.
The Feya figure is in the sitting position so it won't be "usable" by itself, you can also purchase the same figurine alone in a standing position. I really like how the figure fits perfectly on the horse and won't fell down and I also like how that is true for any adult horse from any of their range - I have been buying the horses for years and Feya fits on any of them perfectly. As I mentioned the figure is hand painted, there are some really amazing details on it such as a plant tattoo on the leg, the locket on the necklace - there are some minor "imperfections" in colouring but this just reassures me that this is truly hand-painted and in my mind makes it even more perfect for me.
"The nameless stallion"
It's a stallion all right, with the details on this figure you can figure that out without a doubt. I like the details on the horse even more than I like them on Feya, texture of the body surface gives the look of horse hair making it unbelievably realistic for a "plastic" figure. It also has hand-painted details on it, lovely little flowers on the tail and mane are especially fantastic. The eyes also have a subtle shading around them which makes them stand out even more. The horse looks fabulous with or without Feya.
The figures are very sturdy and durable, they are safe for children (although I am not keen on sharing mine hehe), I do not remember what is the age limit but will check it upon my next purchase - I checked on-line though and they claim it is suitable for children 3 years and up. I do feel that that is the case though because the toy (no, no it's an action figure!!!) has no small or dangerous parts. It won't break when dropped (although if a child would drop mine, my heart might be braking a bit :), this was tested by my evil cat.
There are quite a few action figures from Bayala series (and many other interesting series from the manufacturer) so you can build up quite a collection for either admiring (if you are an adult) or endless fantasy playtime (if this is for a child). I can't wait to get my hands on next figurine to add to my "little" collection.
I took the liberty to get measurement information from their web site and it is; length 15,1 cm width 4,9 cm hight 15,3 cm. This measures are for a mounted horse. Horse itself is about 9 cm tall (give or take a millimetre).
German company Schleich produce a range of different action figures. They specialise in models which have been crafted with care and attention. Their fantasy range is going to appeal to a broad section of people, from girls who like horses, to sci fi or fantasy buffs who like elves and goblins and make believe. I like the models for the latter reason and find them thrilling from a collectors' point of view.
This model is made from plastic and measures about six or so inches in length. For you nine pounds, should you get a boxed version, you get the elfish rider on her horse. The rider balances with elegance on the side of the horse as she rides. The horse is the more interesting of the two, with a wonderful pose. Schleich have captured the true movement of the horse to a tee and the way the head is cocked is spot on. On the downside, the girly pink colour scheme might put some guys off buying this. On the other side of the coin, if you bought a Princess Leia, you could argue that you need to get the females to complete the collection!
The elf rider is a stunning woman with lovely golden tresses caught in the wind. I love the way her delicate feminity has been moulded and her costume is chic and pretty in the right places. Her wings open at the back in a gaping fashion and have been detailed very nicely with a lot of articulation. The toy is a little static so play value might be restricted here.
The toy would be great for sci fi buffs who might want to use the figure in a carded role play game or it could be used as a standalone display piece. Either way, highly detailed and visually striking, this is one fine action figure.
The Schleich World of Elves range are hand painted and perfect for enjoyable roleplay - build up a collection for hours of fun. All figures are CE tested and approved. Lord of The Rings Trilogy.
