      Pretty cool figurine

Meerkats are all the rage these days. What with Meerkat Manor and those Compare the Market commercials they've become the next big animal to hit our homes.

Schleich have cashed in on popularity of these little critters it seems with their range of Meerkats. This Standing Meerkat statuette certainly looks good. It's made out of durable, strong plastic and has been modeled nicely, accurately representing the animal. The paint job also looks very good, very professional and error-free and the figurine looks very real, and not cartoonish like a lot of similar style figures are in risk of being

It's a very small figure, admittedly, standing at a titchy 5 centimeters tall. Its miniscule size means it runs risk of being lost on a shelf or something, so it's good to place him somewhere you'll see him. It looks good in a workplace, and makes a great small decorative piece.

All in all, while quite a small figure, it's well made and looks amazing. Going pretty cheap on Amazon, for only 2.50, it's not a bad stocking stuffer, or small gift for yourself

Buy Him.... And Call Him Alexander!

I'm a collector, I admit it. If something takes my fancy I'll start a collection..... then when I get bored I'll either give it all away, Ebay the collection or just put it all in a box in the cubby hole in my room. Last year it was pigs, this year it's meerkats! Blame Alexander! The pig fad actually lasted for AGES so when I got fed up of looking at them and boxed all the stuff up my bedroom looked mega bare, I knew I had to get another collection going and because I already had a couple of meerkat ornaments I decided they would be the perfect thing to spend my cash on.

I brought this one at the start of the year. I brought it to use as an ornament and not as a toy so I wasn't bothered by how tiny it was when it arrived, anyway it said clearly on Amazon that it's only 5.7cm tall so you can't moan about it! I say that because at the same time my meerkat loving cousin brought one and she was livid at how tiny it was but for me it's perfect. It looks a lot bigger on the Amazon page but really it's about the right size for putting with those small plastic farmyard animals you can buy.... but then it looks a bit out of proportion next to a 4cm tall cow!

The Standing Meerkat is made of a nice plastic, it feels very smooth and shiny but because the fur has been shaped to be bumpy it definitely doesn't look smooth. Actually I'm not explaining that very well because the figure definitely ISN'T smooth but that's the texture of the plastic they have used to make it. It doesn't feel like a hard plastic and it's one of those toys you could just hold comfortably in your hand for ages, if that's the kind of thing that turns you on!

He's very realistic looking and is in the classic position for a meerkat standing up. The feet and tail of the meerkat help him to keep his balance and I was surprised by how stable he is sitting on my shelf because he doesn't wobble at all and has only fallen over once... and that was my fault because I slammed the door and nearly EVERYTHING on my shelf fell over!

I don't let my 3 year old sister play with this meerkat very often even though she loves him. That's only because of the size of it though because it's made to be a toy but young kids like my sister might put it in their mouth and I think at 5.7cm (and MUCH smaller in thinness!) it could be dangerous for choking. The recommended age is 5 years and above and that's probably about right because that would be the kind of age where they are playing with small toys like this and most of the risk of them putting toys in their mouths has passed. Another thing is that very young children might lose the toy and that would be a shame because it's so cute! I almost lost him the last time my sister played with him under my supervision because she put him down on the floor and the meerkat rolled under the bed, I wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't seen it happen and then he would have ended up in the Dyson!

Overall though I think this is a brilliant figure for anyone who loves meerkats. It's got the right colours, looks realisitic and is very cute. I would recommend it for anyone who is looking for meerkat ornaments but not if you're looking for an actual TOY for a child, and anyway there are shedloads of meerkat cuddly toys available that would be a lot more suitable for children.

This figure is made my Schleich so you know it's going to be good quality, I only paid £2.50 for it but have seen it since for sale at Dudley Zoo for £1.99 with a couple of other meerkat designs that I also brought.
