Super Mario Bros Action Figure - Yoshi
Advantages: Well detailed authentic looking toy.
Disadvantages: Could present choking hazard, should have been glued togther better.
It's funny with all the high quality and much more expensive toys my son owns, that he loves this simple plastic one so much. This is roughly 6" tall, and we do have this in green, blue and, and red, but it is the red one that is the best loved. These are also available in pink and yellow. Like some children have a favourite teddy bear, this is the toy that goes to sleep with him every night, has to be present for story time, and even sits at the table for dinner. We did forget Yoshi once and start reading without him. Halfway through a book, my son jumped up and rushed off to find this. We then had to start story time all over as Yoshi had missed the first ones!
This is not soft or cuddly, but then my sons have never been especially fussed with cuddly toys. It is very well detailed, and I believe it is a very accurate representation of the video game character. This would look lovely on a collectors shelf - and I can see older fans of the video game having this just as decoration. This is sold as an action figure though, which to me implies it is meant to be played with, and as a toy it does have a few faults. This is made of molded plastic in seven pieces. The legs and arms are very stiff when first purchased and could easily be damaged. i would suggest that a parent carefully work the arms and legs back and forth to free them up before giving this to a child. The arms and head can be pulled off if you are not careful - but they do go back on, much as a Barbie dolls head can be replaced when it falls off.
The biggest problem is that the nose piece is glued in place - and is not glued very well. My poor son was horrified when Yoshi's face just fell off. Thankfully it was easily fixed with superglue. The red colour has faded just a bit, likely from being taken out in the sun so often, and paint has rubbed off the boot as well. Even the paint on the eyes looks just a bit worn, but my son has never noticed. This really is one of those toys that truly well loved, and no matter how worn it should become - I can't imagine ever parting with it. When my sons outgrows this, it will still be kept - it has too many memories to ever throw away.
This toy sells for £9.99 from Amazon, but we bought ours from ebay at just over £2 each. Ours were shipped from Hong Kong, which means shipping time may run into the months. If ordered from Amazon, you can expect this in days, or even the next day if you are willing to pay for the service. If not for the issue with the face falling off, I would say £9.99 isn't too bad, but it does seem a bit dear for a 6" plastic toy. But I would certainly pay full price if I had to, considering how much joy this has brought my son. This toy is more like a friend than an object - although at times a very naughty friend. Yoshi does misbehave at times! But my 3 year old son really seems to think of this as part of the family.
Considering the fact that this is somewhat breakable, and the risk of being lost as it must go everywhere, I have taken the precaution of buying a spare and keeping it safely stored away. If it is never used - mint toys like this are collectible. But if something should ever happen to this very much loved toy - a new one might not quite fill the void, as children always seem to know the difference between their old well loved toy and a replacement, but at least we will have something.
Because parts can come off this toy - I would very much recommend against this toy for younger children who might choke on a piece. I can't say as I have ever really gone by the recommended age of 3 for this type of thing. If your child has outgrown mouthing toys at 2, I see no reason not to let them have this toy. If they still chew on toys or might swallow a bit at 3, you definitely want to wait a bit longer.
I would recommend this toy as a decoration or a plaything. If you can order one and wait, then I think this would be perfect as a pocket money toy, a party decoration, or even a stocking stuffer ( it's never to soon to start putting things away for next year). I think this would make a lovely cake decoration - my son's 4th birthday cake will feature a few toys from this line and blocks and cubes of cake and icing to make a Mario 3-d land. We used a set of these to create the best ever Easter hunt this year, as we had Bowser steal all the sweets and the children follow clues to find the other characters and save their chocolates. It made our Easter morning into a real life video game adventure. I think this would be a very fun activity for a holiday - or children spending a few days with a relative as well. At only £2, you might even consider these for party bags.
If I had paid the full £10, I am sure I would be complaining about the face falling off. As it is, this problem is easily fixed, and since this available at a much lower price, I am not rating down for this. I am leaving the rating up to my son, who says this is the best toy ever - for the price I simply can not complain.
I do not intend to review any more of these toys, as I feel I will be repeating myself too much, but will point out that most Mario characters are available in this line, including Bowser, Wario, Princess Peach, several versions of Mario and Luigi, King Boo, the Koopas, Donkey Kong and many more. They are all very well detailed, but all seem to share the same design flaws, in that they can fall apart easily. Prices range from £2 - £10 depending on the character and where you purchase this.
Summary: Yoshi isn't just a toy - he is my son's friend as well.
