“ Manufacturer: LJN „
In every cartoon show, there is always a dense character, who is getting into trouble and having nothing ever go their way. In Thundercats, this character was definitely Monkian. He looks like his name, a monkey in a helmet, a cross between Planet Of The Apes and Gladiator.
Monkian used to work with comrades Jackalman and Slythe, carrying orders from the evil Mumm Ra. The three were pretty useless and never got good results! Toymaker LJN produced a figure of Monkian in the late eighties. A satisfying six inch figure based on the character in the show, designed for children to play with.
The toy is fully poseable, with a twisting head, arms which raise and legs which can be seated. Monkian is fierce looking and chunky. Made from plastic, he is robust and will stand up to being thrown around a garden or bedroom. All the Thundercats toys were well made and sturdy and never snapped because the limbs were so well attached.
He has a muscular build with pecs and abs and strapping legs, so he clearly works out a lot! The figure has little clothing aside from a tight pair of red trunks and some wrist bands. He does however have a hat which is used as armour and this is fixed to his head. Some nice white fur around Monkian's shoulders complete his ape like appearance. Although the toy has been well made, a little more detail on his face would have helped I feel. The expression is severe, yet some more work around the nose and eyes would have lifted the design further.
His weapon, a slinging chain is great with lovely chunky appeal. He can grip this in either hand and the weapon is very different from other characters' weapons in the toy line up.
Monkian is hard to find boxed, but loose figure are available online for only a few pounds. He is not my favourite in the range, simply because the character was quite irritating, but he is a main character and did play a huge role in the show, so collectors would be wise to add him to their shelves.
