Advantages: Entertainment and food
Disadvantages: In my experience nothing major
Over the past 12 months I have flown with Air France a total of 6 times and have uniformly found them to be an excellent airline for both long and short flights.
Of the 6 flights 5 of them left and arrived right on time although the 5th was around half an hour late due to missing it's take off spot. Additionally all the flights were calm and uneventful.
The planes themselves were comfortable, very clean with a reasonable amount of leg room.. On one of my flights the recline function on my seat didn't work propery meaning I had to have my chair bolt upright or it fell back the full way to its furthest incline. Apart from that everything seemed well-maintained-there was no chipped or broken pieces around the plane.
On the long-haul flights all seats had a personal TV screen istalled in the back of the chair in front and you could choose what you watched. There was a huge selection of films, both recent and old, as well as TV series, CDs available to listen to and games to play too. I was very impressed with the range of entertainment. There was also a wide range of magazines and newspapers provided in English, French and the language of the places I flew to or from.
All flights provided a large number of snacks and refreshments. I hda to take a couple of short flights with the airline from Paris to London in the morning and found fresh pan au chocolat being offered along with drinks even when the flights was less than 1 hour. On the long haul flights the meals were very good. Obviously this is still plane food but the meals were of good quality and included fruits, cheeses and bread that tasted reasonably fresh. They were also of a good quantity and I wasn't left hungry. Plenty of drinks were offered during the flight and the staff also seemed happy to be called over if you wanted anything extra.
Having heard that the staff on air france can be quite rude, I was pleased that this was not my experience at all. I found the staff friendly and helpful. Even when I was causing a bit of havoc as I couldn't get my guitar into overhead lockers they were very pleasant and took my guitar to be stored elsewhere for the flight.
The reason that I chose ari france to fly with was much to do with cost. I needed to arrange flights out to Latin America and they were the cheapest I found without buying individual flights to the US and then with different companies down to the south. Returning from a different destination in South America I again found that Air france were the cheapest airline.
Summary: Recommended airline
