Advantages: Low fares, point to point, efficient
Disadvantages: Hidden fees, poor on time record
Having darted across Asia on seven of Air Asia's flights back in the summer of 2008, I can safely report that they are indeed a low cost option for anyone visiting this part of the world. Simply jump on one of their A320's or 737's in Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Jakarta or in any of their other exotic hubs, and a small world of possibilities opens up.
Booked far enough in advance, it is possible to get between any two points on their route network for as little as $100 return. So if you're in Malaysia or Thailand on holiday, or just backpacking around, why not take a trip over to offbeat Brunei for the weekend? Or maybe to Cambodia and the famed grounds of Angkor Wat.
The best advice is to study their route map and determine what is best for you.
As for their service, it is basic, to say the least, but it is what you might expect. Boarding is often chaotic, and the service is minimal. The cabin, however, is quite pleasant, with generous legroom. As with any lowcost airline, it is a matter of choose your own seats.
While I didn't personally experience delays on any of my 7 flights, they are, as an airline, quite renowned for this. Do not therefore schedule any tight connection times. Air Asia do not codeshare with any other airline, or even themselves. Book two flights one after another and if the first is late, Air Asia will not take responsibility for missing the second.
The luggage restrictions are strict at 15kg, so pack sensibibly.
Do however realise that if booked far enough in advance, or on a special offer, Air Asia is perfect for getting about SE Asia quickly and cheaply. Pay close attention to extra fees, and leave long gaps for connecting to other flights or modes of transport. But if you follow all of these rules, you shouldn't encounter any problems. Enjoy!
Summary: With a bit of care, you can take advantage of their low fares easily.

- 23/07/09 They do sound like a good option for getting around Asia. I believe they do long haul now too, Stansted to Perth, Australia. I am on the look out for reiews on that too, (I am always researching airlines for some reason). |
