Advantages: Some airlines have an excellent record. The star rating is for them.

Disadvantages: The worst airlines include CUBANA, AIRLINES OF THE FORMER SOVIET UNION, AERO PERU, AIR ZIMBABWE, BALAIR, ROMAVIA, MERPATI....,

To compile this list I have made use of several internet sites which rate the safety of airlines, and made use of a number of newspaper articles. Factors considered include number of crashes and number of flights.

UNITED STATES & CANADA
The safer airlines include: Canadian Airlines, American Airlines, United Airlines, Continental Airlines, America West Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Delta Airlines, Northwest Airlines.

The less safe airlines: Air Tran

SOUTH AMERICA
safer airlines include: BWIA, Mexicana

The less safe airlines include: AUSTRAL LINEAS AEREAS (Argentina),AERO PERU, CUBANA, TAM, LAN Chile, VASP, AVIANCA

EUROPE
The safer airlines include: Lufthansa, Swissair, KLM, SAS, Tyrolean Airways, British Midland, Crossair, Aer Lingus, Air UK, Austrian Airlines, Sabena, Finnair,

( and British Airways , although it should be noted that around 5 October 2000 there was bad publicity from a Channel 4 programme alleging "a culture of drinking" among some BA pilots!!!)
(Airlines with a record which is very slightly less good than the likes of Lufthansa: Olympic, Air France).

The less safe airlines include: BALAIR/CTA (Switzerland), ROMAVIA (Rumania), Air Georgia, ATLANTIC AIRWAYS Faroe Islands Denmark, Khors Air (Ukraine), Air Urga (Ukraine), Ukraine International, Air Kazakhstan, Moldavian Airlines, Turan Air (Azerbaijan), Azerbaijan Airlines, TRANS EAST AIRLINES(Latvia), East Line JSC (Russia), Kogyalymavia (Russia), Ural Airlines (Russia), Krasnoyarsk Airlines (Russia), THY, Airlines of the former Soviet Union.

AFRICA & THE MIDDLE EAST
safer airlines include: El Al, Kenya Airways, Kuwait Airways, South African Airways, Tunis Air,

The less safe airlines : COMAIR (South Africa), TAAG ANGOLA AIRLINES, AIR ZIMBABWE, ROYAL JORDANIAN, EGYPTAIR, NIGERIA AIRWAYS, ETHIOPIAN AIRLINES, AIR AFRIQUE, AIR SENEGAL

ASIA & AUSTRALASIA
Safer airlines include
: Ansett, Qantas, All Nippon Airways, Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, Air new Zealand, Singapore Airlines.

The less safe airlines include: ARIANA AFGHAN, MIAT Mongolian Airlines, CHINA AIRLINES (TAIWAN), AIR INDIA, KOREAN AIR, PAKISTAN INTERNATIONAL AIRLINES, INDIAN AIRLINES, PHILIPPINE AIR LINES, MERPATI Indonesia (flies from Jakarta to Bali), GARUDA INDONESIAN, MYANMAR AIRWAYS Burma,

Am flying to Australia with Ansett in December so we pleased to read your rate them as safe. My husband knows a great deal about aircraft and agrees with your thoughts on the soviet airlines but this is based upon the type of aeroplanes that they use and the quality of their safety regulations so, like ermintrude, I would be interested to hear more about the basis of your evaluation.

Um... I have no real reason to doubt you, but where did this info come from? It's just a list of names, and without knowing the source I didn't feel I could rate it very highly. Sorry :( I'd be happy to uprate it if you added a bit more background info and a few more details.
