Alitalia and Airone have now merged and although keep the 2 brands, they cooperate on flights within Italy and internationally from Milan and Rome.

I used Alitalia to fly to Italy from London, and from Italy to Greece, Bulgaria, Spain and Malta.

I also flew within Italy with Alitalia.

Alitalia offer good rates on their connection to Italy and run regular promotions. They can be very often cheaper not only than BA, but also the low costs companies.

If in terms of tariffs they are competitive, in terms of service they are not that great.

The food is non existent, they only serve you a snack and a drink, although you can ask for an extra serving of snacks or drinks. The seats are ok, but surely not the most comfortable, the storage space is fine, but I found that the lights in the plane are very dim. I have problems in reading papers on their planes unless it is daylight.

I also found that their toilets are not always in pristine condition, I am not sure if this is partly the fault of fellow passengers or their cleaning agents.

The on board magazine is actually good, with very detailed articles on Italian destinations. I find it one of the best of the industry.

Staff normally speaks English and some of their male and female stewards and hostesses are really pretty.

They do not seem to bother too much, at least like BA, with their duty free goods. I have the impression that their staff prefer to save time to chat, rather than selling.

Alitalia has a turbulent past, it is still a company in danger of going bankrupt, and as pointed out on other reviews on this website, strikes do occur and every year there are passengers being stranded.

If you work in the Balkans, they have a good network and offer a good stopover if you come from London and want to go shopping in Milan.

I am going to review Malpensa airport later, please bear in mind that Malpensa is not in Milan and it costs 100 euros by taxi to go to Milan.
