Advantages: Business Class seats, Space, Inflight service

Disadvantages: Punctuality, Transit at Rome

Alitalia's Business Class is suprisingly good.
I recently flew from Accra in Ghana to Bombay (India)with them and their flight was in two sectors. First was the Accra to Rome sector and next was the Rome to Bombay (Mumbai) sector.
On both these sectors they are still using First Class seats in Business Class on the MD-11 aircraft.
Basically the seats have not yet been converted into the actual Business Class seats yet as they are older aircrafts.
The seats are in Grey colour leather. You can stretch your legs totally and not reach the seat in front of you. The inflight service and cuisine is not bad either.
But the most important is the comfort due to the seats.
The stopover in Rome is not that good however. Our flight arrived at 6.00 am in the morning in Rome and the Business Class Lounge did'nt open until 7.00am, so we had to just hang around waiting for it to open.
The lounge is not all that great but basically has all that one would expect such as spacious seating, snacks, drinks, magazines, newspapers and television.
Whenever you take a flight with Alitalia ask your travel agent what type of aircrapt they are using. If it's the MD-11 then and your going Business Class then its a must.

Alitalia is the national airline of Italy. The fly practically everywhere in the world and all flights out of Italy (Rome or Milan)
