Advantages: The can't keep you forever
Disadvantages: Must try harder ...
I used American Airlines on a return flight to Logan airport, in chicago from Birmingham International UK. Naturally, for an apparent 'flagship' outfit, one would expect the level of service and comfort to be beyond reproach.
That proved not to be the case. I found AA to be somewhat indifferent and not very responsive to the needs of the customer, certainly in economy class anyway. The cabin crew were cold and rather off-hand I thought. This was a reflection of the check-in staff at BHX, who didin't seem to care whether I flew with them one way or the other.
perhaps the best word I can find is 'robotic', as the crew went through their functions with a matter of fact, rather bored look on their faces. I've read somewhere that they're not paid very well, which may account for the way they approached their tasks.
The service level apart, this was compounded by some truly awful 'food', for want of a better word. Sure, I understand that airplane fare is pre-packaged and pretty generic in the class I usually fly in, but this was not what I expected. It would be unfair to say that is characteristic of all American airlines, as I found Continental Airlines to be much better.
In the final analyis, rating airlines is a fairly subjective affair, and it's diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks. But, I have heard similar remarks from American Airlines customers who were delegates at the conference in Chicago I attended. So, maybe it's not just me. But I doubt if I'll use them again.
Summary: never again
