We used American Airlines for a recent shot break to New York flying out of Heathrow. I have to say that I expected better from a flagship airline that carries the national flag of a country where customer service within most companies is very improtant, certainly American Airlines ranks rather poorly when compared with both of the UK carriers Virgin and British Airways.

Check in was fine and pretty efficient, the same cannot be said about the security checks on either side of the Atlantic but that is not really the fault of American Airlines. We had an aisle seat and the one next to it on the centre row of seats, the plane itself looked a bit shabby in cattle class, the seat itself had pretty good leg room and width is never a problem for me however I was disappointed not to see an inflight TV in the headrest in front of me so knew that the entertainment would be on small drop down screens above your heads. Sadly the ones in front of me did not work properly and so I was grateful that I had a book, i-pod and also a couple of magazines to pass the time. The return flight they did work but that was overnight so I was aslepp for some of it.

The staff were pretty friendly but very busy and as such you had to wait ages to get your tray cleared and the food was the usual inedible stuff that I just wished I had never even accepted as I ate next to nothing as the pasta looked insipid and the boyfriends chicken was rubbery according to him.

The flights passed off smoothly however I was not overly impressed and would only book them again if they were significantly cheaper than the competition.
