I was delayed on all four flights. Food service is poor (more later), and staff are clearly depressed that they can’t go work for a proper airline. I travel across the Atlantic reasonably often, and have tried out most of the carriers that can get me from Detroit to London or Birmingham. All I want is an airline that can achieve this without placing too much stress on me, or my wallet. It was my wallet that encouraged me to try American TransAir the first time, and insanity that led me to believe that I should give them a second go. American TransAir fly a fairly frequent service from Detroit Metro to London Gatwick. Gatwick is not in my top ten world favorite airports as, if you are travelling on to anywhere north of the Thames, you can usually expect to spend a few hours stationary on the M25. ... We flew from Gatwick to Orlando on ATA in October 2000. Although the flights were ok the planes that we flew on where outdates and uncomfortable. To start with the planes were so old that they needed to refuel in Canada. The refuelling process requires all passengers to disembark (down steps into the cold Canadian weather) for safety purposes and then wait in a horrible terminal building for 45 minutes before getting back onto the same plane to carry on the journey. We left all of our belongings on the plan. This is not too bad if done during the day – however, the return flight also requires that every passenger leave the plane.
