Advantages: Its British and its affordable

Disadvantages: Not many

British Airways - in a word consistent. I have flown with this airline between the UK and South America and the UK and Australia several times. Inflicting a long haul flight upon yourself is generally not a lot of fun, well the first few hours are great but once the cramp, numb backside and general lack of space start to get to you then you begin to find fault with pretty much everything around you. Bearing this in mind I have always found BA to provide a decent level of food, entertainment and have always found the cabin crew pleasant and courteous. The crew unlike with other airlines are a mixture of ages, races and sex and I find this one of the plus points of the airline. It's almost a little old fashioned in it's choice of uniform and Britishness but I have always felt safe and confident that I would arrive pretty much on time. Delays are inevitable considering the volume of airlines traversing the skies these days so you just have to take it in your stride.
When you have a 24 hour flight ahead of you what difference will a few extra hours in the airport make. Think of it as good for offsetting the risk of deep vein thrombosis by having a good old stretch of the limbs and a freshen up in the airport facilities.
British Airways is right up there with the best in the world, its safety record whilst not perfect is nowhere near as bad as some of the airlines I have flown with in Indonesia and Asia for example.
Yes its expected to be perfect and amazing as the flag flyer for Britain but come on be realistic, fares are reasonably priced, it flies to a massive range of places and you can expect a consistently decent level of service. If you want the absolute best then save up for an extra year and fly first class otherwise accept that what you get for your money with BA is not a bad deal at all.

Summary: British Airways is not the bad man of the air - in fact its pretty good
