I regularly fly from Gatwick to Atanta using Delta. This is the cheapest flight from London and one that avoids the nightmare of Heathrow.

Overall Delta is a fair carrier regarding level of service. Knowing they have had severe financial problems behind the scenes, the element that has suffered most in terms of service, is the condition of the planes. Seats look a little worn and there are thin blankets and skimpy pillows on offer. There is no 'doggy bag' to take home. More often than not I have found that the headphones are faulty so the audio is crackly or only one channel works- and the major annoyance in the 21st century- the screens are often shared rather than being on the back of the seat in front of you. This can make a 9 hour flight feel long in places.

The food is of an acceptable standard and as a veggie, even if I couldn't book a veggie meal with my ticket through a cheap website, the staff will always go and find something to put together for me. The staff feel like long-timers on this route and they know how to serve passengers efficiently. Having experienced much off-handedness on American Airlines over the years, this is important when flying- especially if you're not a keen flyer like me.

For £300-450 on average for a return ticket I would recommend this non-stop London-Atlanta flight above any of the competitors, as long as spending 9 hours on an plane with a slightly dated interior is acceptable.
