In the past I've flown many times, most of which I haven't worried about much, the odd niggle about not being able to move about but there's foot exercises and perhaps the odd thought about terrorists but not in any depth. Until a few years ago.

In 2003 my Mum died and my partner and I had a holiday booked a few months after this happened. We went ahead with the holiday but for the weeks running up to the event I simply could not shake the feeling we were going to die on the plane.

I know this was a reaction to my Mum dying and I knew it then but it brought to the surface all the worries about flying, would a group of terrorists blow up the plane? Would we get hijacked and crash somewhere? What if the plane got a fault and we crashed? What if I do get DVT and don't realise in time? All those kind of questions rushed to the fore.

Even though it was a temporary reaction to the situation at the time I have to confess once my brain had got hold of these concerns there was no looking back. Although the intensity of the concern lessened over time it never reduced back to my former lack of concern. Perhaps age contributed or maybe I'm just more aware of my mortality.

We haven't flown for a while now for various reasons (not my paranoia!) but I think when we do again I will have a level of concern about it. No matter how strict airport security is there's always going to be those who can find ways around it, human error and disloyalty is a concern and we are still very much a target for terrorism. It's no longer the joyous holiday sensation it once was.
