Advantages: Safer than driving

Disadvantages: There will always be accidents no matter how safe!

With all the accidents involving airliners in the news recently people can be forgiven for becoming nervous about flying but I personally feel very safe and comfortable with it, perhaps it is just the "oh it won't happen to me attitude" but I never feel any fear from flying and I treat it as a big part of my holiday.

Airline accidents always make big news because they carry so many people and they are just such awesome machines but there are far more accidents involving road transport that over all claim far more lives and the statistics say you would have to fly for around 12 hours a day every day for a hundred years to increase your chance of being killed in an accident to the same as your chance of being killed on the road.

Now I know all these statistics go out the window when we hear of planes crashing and killing everyone on board but we have to try not to panic (which as a nation we do too much) and get on with our lives as we would normally.

I do feel that in this time of credit crunch and all the rest of it that there is the slight possibility that some lesser airlines might skimp a bit on things so they can keep their turn over up but I doubt if there are too many if any airlines that would seriously dare to skimp on health and safety issues.

Summary: Still the safest way to travel.
