Advantages: Quick going places
Disadvantages: If we are not careful, accidents will become more and more common
The recent accidents/crashes and near misses and other incidents have been well publicised. The fact that a 28 years old woman was killed because of long distance travelling (from Austrialia to UK) has been widely reported. As has been repoted, her death was caused by a disease named deep vein thrombosis (DVT). It is true that this disease in theory could strike all long distance travellers - a blood clot due to no movement of legs for long periods of time. It must be said that although the possibility of this happenning this exists, histroy tells us that there has been 1 tragical occurance in the recent past. Here, a little bit of common knowledge will help a great deal - Go for a walk (I know it cab be embarassing) every couple of hours. Probability of having a heart attack sitting in your own living room is perhaps far greater that dying through DVT. Statistically, air travel is one of the safest way to go to and from places. Road accidents happen all around the world much more frequently, yet in a lot of places, they do not get reported. Air travel is sometimes necessary. If nations are going to trade globally and be responsive to their customers, we have to use air transportation. What we must do is perhaps restrain from congesting the airways to such an extent that airline disasters become common. Until that date, I for one will not hesitate to commute by air.

- 16/04/01 I FULLY agree with you. It's the media that shows crashes that makes ppl afraid of flying. Flying IS the safest way to travel!! (yes, safer than busses) |

- 02/02/01 I strongly believe that the reason it is being well publicised is the reason why there has been such fright from the generel public. It is again scaremongering by the press. I also find it interesting that there are calls for greater footroom on flights. If this happens there will have to be more flights as less people would be able to fit on one plane. |
