Advantages: Good product, great price advantage over flying direct
Disadvantages: They're not part of any big airline alliance (they're tied in w NW), so difficult to choose them if you're keen on earning useful airmiles
Flew KLM last year to Bangkok, via Amsterdam, and found the journey just about seamless and the service pretty good. Their business-class product is competitive with other airlines, yet their rates are really reasonable. It's worthwhile if you're planning on flying out to the Far East on holidays, and considering doing it in style, to look at this airline.
Seating in business was good, with newly designed seats, and the standard biz class 48 inch pitch. However, I now understand that as of 2001 they have increased pitch to 60 inches (HUGE) and added a new meal service etc, so things sound like they've gotten even better.
Seriously, a direct flight from Heathrow can cost you at least UKP1000+ more in business on BA/Qantas. Via Amsterdam, you get a couple of hours shopping in Schipol (pretty fab shops), a few drinkies in their lounge, and a Big saving! If you're on holiday, a couple of hours I've found makes very little difference. So there is a big cost advantage. Thai has just brought down their return fares to Bangkok, but that's still around gpb500 more.
On the return journey there was an unavoidable delay which meant I Just made the connecting flight from Amsterdam to Heathrow. My luggage didn't though, but ground staff handled the situation professionally and they delivered it to my home at my stipulated time that evening, in fact saving me hauling it from the airport to my office!
