Advantages: Price, Legroom, Routes,
Disadvantages: No Seat Assigning
I flew with Ryanaire for the first time in June this year. I flew from East Midlands airport to Barcelona Gerona and back.
I've heard a lot of bad things about this airline, mainly about how they appear to be cheap but then with the extras they become more expensive. In my opinion this is just people wanting something for nothing. When I was searching for the flight even when I had paid taxes and extra baggage it was still nearly £100 per person cheaper than the next cheapest alternative!
You do have to pay to take baggage onto the plane other than your hand luggage but at something like £7 for a 15kg bag it's not bad money at all. Just beware. It is very expensive to push your luck and go over the 15kg limit so it's worth buying an extra bag rather than paying the excess because this is much more expensive.
The second thing to bare in mind is that you don't get assigned a seat on the plane. It's just like getting on a bus, first come first serve with the seats so if you want to guarentee a seat with the people you're travelling with it's worth getting the priority boarding which means you get on first and it's so cheap I would highly recommend doing it.
The plane was basic and the materials of the seats were more hard wearing rather than looking nice but I suppose this is what makes them so cheap and to be fair you get what you pay for. On saying this, I had the most legroom i've had on a flight in a long time which at 6'4" is very important for me. The staff were friendly enough, although some were a little strange but i'm sure this would be different on a different day.
Check in was as good as anywhere else with any other airline i've been with and their guarentee to be ontime is a good selling point, although on the return we were delayed an hour but they did do a 10 minute turn around to keep it just an hour.
Our baggage and ourselves arrived safely in both directions and I can't really fault it as far as air travel goes.
If you're expecting to pay nothing and get first class standards then you will be disapointed but for those of us reasonable to accept you get what you pay for will not. It is economy travel but it's clean, tidy, comforable travel and very low prices and I will certainly be using them again in the future.
Summary: Be prepared to pay the extras and you'll still get a great deal!
